This statistic is totally meaningless.
Is the 50\% based on the number pf *people earning wages* or the
number of *wage dollars earned*?
When I see those numbers, I have to think it's based on *wage
dollars earned*. Folks like Bill Gates & Warren Buffett kinda
skew the numbers.

It's based simply on income tax payers. Obviously it is skewed, that is
the whole point.

I don't have a source, but It's been in a couple of papers that the
top 1% contribute some huge percentage of the tax revenue to the
government, like 20% or something like that, so it makes sense the
rest of the top 49% would make up the difference.
The bottom 20% contribute next to nothing, yet are the largest
recipients of aid, which is to be expected, so the only remaining
factor is how much of the tax burden does the bottom 21-49% wage
earners contribute to the public coffers.

Its percentage of 'Income Tax' not 'Tax'.
Neither is it 'All Taxes'. Neither does it state in any way
that the top 50% of the wage earners pay a higher
percentage of their earnings in taxes than the lower 50%.
To give a simple example: Bill Gates no doubt pays
quite some income tax on the money Microsoft pay him.
However, most of Bill Gates' total income has been
the increased value of his Microsoft shares. And he
does not pay any taxes on that.
The stat also might contain those bottom 20-30% who
technically have hardly any income, such as stay-at-home moms,
unemployed people, students whose costs of living
are fully funded by their parents and/or by loans.
I have a statistic to add: 50% of all income millionaires
in Hamburg, Germany, pay no income tax at all, and thus
technically would be eligible to apply for welfare.

The stat includes people who *pay* income tax. I fail to see why this is
so hard for some to understand. (I don't mean you, Neo, but some others
I've seen questioning it.)

As we have not seen the stat itself, but only the

how you arrive at the conclusion that the stat does
not contain people who do not pay any income tax.

Which has been my question to "RICH" in another newsgroup. What is the source
of the statement? Where is the reputable cite for the determination?
