What kind of social services or aid societies exist where you live? There
may be people who help, but they can be hard to find. Around here, and
other places I know, there are volunteers for hot meals, delivered or home
cooked right there in your kitchen, and for helping around the house,
running errands, helping with pets, all kinds of things, even dealing with
landlords.

bev's right. with only myself ill in my household, i qualified
for a local service which sent cleaning help 1/2 day per week.
with rick having cancer as well as your illness, your
household might well qualify for local disability programs.
mine were set up for the elderly and disabled, i believe
through the county. worth looking into.

Social support for the the ill in the U.S. stinks... (I'm presuming
you're a resident) I don't know how often I have thought the words in
the title of your post, but its a lot. I guess like a lot of others, I
often end up consoling myself with the thought that if ***** gets too
bad, I'll just check out. Characterize my feelings as you will; I
know quite well that there are limits beyond which I can fight no
more.
That said, I'll mention the usual fianancial-support stuff for ill
people:
1)Social Security Disability Income, if you or or your husband cannot
work.
2)Free medications provided by the companies which manufacture them,
for people who cannot afford them.
3)Food stamps, and Social Security 'Supplemental Security Income' if
your assets are nearly completely depleted.
The first can take a long time to get, and may require a lawyer if you
are initially declined by the Administration (and trust me- they are in
no hurry to add you to the rolls). The key is the doctor's letter
saying you are disabled. If doc won't write it, its time for a new
doc..
One note regarding electric heat; radiant heat-lamp bulbs burn 300
Watts of electricity, and heat the localized area upon which they
shine; not the air in the room. These run about ten bucks, with a
simple reflector and crossed-wire shield, and may help keep landlord
from bitching about electric bill. Most standard electric
room-heathers burn 1,200 to 1,500 watts. The heatlamps tend to cook
part of you, while leaving the rest cold, but they do save. Just
secure them well, (I drilled holes in the reflectors, and added baling
wire supports to them at my last place)- as they do get hot enough to
start a fire.
Thinking of you both,
Christopher
