I second what Tara said. I ended up with some nasty bites and scratches
from a stray and I would also urge you to go to the hospital or walk in
clinic if for no other reason to get a tetnaus shot. As for cleaning the
wound use Bactin in the squirt bottle. It is the most amazing antiseptic
ever invented.

The doc irrigated them some more, said to continue the neosporin
ointment, & gave me antibiotics, He said they don't look infected, but just
in case. Oh, he also said "stay out of the dirt!" I've been planting
flowers, he gave me some latex gloves and told me to wrap the wrist with
tape if I absolutely had to play in the dirt.
Thanks everybody, I appreciate alll the responses.

My mom's Dr.'s orders, go to the hospital. she has been badly
infected several times. she's old, and her immune system isn't so
good any more. Watch it closely. If it gets red, or warm to the
touch. hie thee hence to a hospital.

Cat bites can be dangerous. Very dangerous.
Cats are notorious for having particularly nasty bacteria in their mouths. The
cat's tooth is sharp, so it punctures the skin rather than cutting it. It's
tapered, so it stretches the skin going in. The skin is elastic so it contracts
as the tooth slides out. This also scrapes the bacteria off the tooth and traps
it under the skin.
*****
RUN, don't walk, to the hospital and have the wound cleaned and disinfected
there. Get antibiotics. Take them.
*****
I used to work at a no-kill cat shelter, and I've had 3 serious bites.
The first time, I waited 12 hours before I went to the hospital. They would have
kept me there if it hadn't been during the ice storm of 1998; I was walking
wounded, so they kept the bed for someone who needed it more. Just the same, I
had to go back to the hospital three days in a row so the doctor could squeeze
the infected matter out of the wound on my arm, and the nurse could give me
intravenous antibiotics. Followup included oral antibiotics for another 10 days.
The second time, I waited 6 hours before I went to the hospital. In fact I ended
up sicker this second time; I spent five days in the hospital, again on
intravenous antibiotics, and the doctors told me I came within hours of losing
my finger to the infection. (The cat's tooth pierced my knuckle, and it was
extremely difficult to treat.) Again, when I left hospital, I was carrying oral
antibiotics.
The third time, I went to the hospital right away. The wound was more of a cut
than a piercing, shallow and easy to clean, and they handled me as an
outpatient. I still had to take oral antibiotics for over a week.
So no dillydallying. Get treatment sooner rather than later. Believe me, it will
save you money and time and possibly more important things.

Scrub--and I do mean SCRUB--the wound with an anti-bacterial soap and
warm water, to get whatever gunk might be in the wound. (Yeah, it'll
hurt, but an infection will hurt a whole lot more.)
Run water over it for a few minutes or so to make sure it's clean and
thoroughly rinsed out.
Put an antiseptic solution on it, then antibiotic ointment. Then cover
the wound with a bandage or gauze.
If the wound turns red and starts swelling within twelve hours, head for
the hospital. Seriously. An infected cat bite wound can really make a
person sick, because the infection will spread through the whole body.
It can even cause blood poisoning.
HTH. Be well.

I've been soaking it in hot water and using neosporin. She bit me twice,
it's not as swolen today, but is red around the edges. If it's not any
better tomorrow, I'll go to the docs. Thank you NCN
