What is the current thinking on the use of Paxil and Buspar to treat
moderate anxiety (GAD) with mild depression?
My doctor is somewhat old school. I've taken those drugs in combination
in the past, and I had good results.
I'm wondering if there's something better/newer out there?

Good results == Good reason to keep with the combo -- but

Good question, one place to read up on it is:
Guide to Medications for Mental Illness:

but the edge is still Out there. Or maybe it's In... HST (1967)
when i got to the edge , i built a deck % (2005)
.

This would be a good combination, you might look into an antipsychotic
and a norephineprine type of anti-depressant, such as cymballta,
remeron, or Pamalar to take in addition to these meds.
