A dear friend is going through some bad times. Her husband is unfaithful, no
need for gory details. How or can she find where and what he's done on the
internet? He use(d) her computer and her username/password to log onto
Windows XP. History and cookies have been deleted. She asked me, I haven't a
clue.
Thanks.

You are ever so helpful!
The computer has done nothing wrong and she has no suspicions about it at
all whatsoever.

Sorry for the lame attempt at humor. PC investigator? C'mon? I was thinking
a PC literate person might respond with a meaningful answer, I thought you
were joking.
"The computer has done nothing wrong and she has no suspicions about it at
all whatsoever." was the weak humor since I thought you were joking. She
found a record for purchase of flowers and candy not sent to her. That's
where her suspicion lies.

Yup. Not to be a suck-hole but I got your joke first up. Thought it was
mildly humorous. Not great, but not "weak" either!

If he's removed the records from the computer, then she can't. He may have
left traces that a Windows expert could find, though; Windows is very
sneaky about keeping records the normal user isn't aware of.
Her ISP may be able to help, if they keep logs of what all their customers
do. I think keeping such logs is compulsory in the USA (but I'm not sure if
anyone other than 'the authorities' can insist on seeing them), and illegal
in some other countries, and in some countries the ISPs have to keep the
logs but tell everyone except 'the authorities' that they don't keep the
logs.

What's the point? If she is feeling the need to snoop into his activities,
it's over already.

Spyware. My ex did it. Before we broke up, he was well-underway with
his next soulmate. No sneaking around, he was honest about
everything. I am fine with it now. I was carrying on with someone
I'd wanted for two years. He freaked. What a hypocrite.
