personalities on ASD |
Sometimes it seems that other people's personalities kind of merge
and melt into yours, I know it sounds kind of strange, but it does seem
to happen sometimes, or something close to it... people's words, theire
tone, their spelling "mood", their "voice" it kind of starts to stay
with you, and sometimes leaks into your own heart and soul... not
always people you are friends with or like very much... but they seem
to become a part of you, even here on ASD... I guess we're all just
sharing parts of ourselves... I think it's so easy to form stereotypes
and misconceptions of who people are... Of course there's probably a
lot of truth in our perceptions, but there's a lot more to people then
we know, I think... Maybe it would be a fine idea if we could focus
more on what people have in common... We spend so much time comparing
ourselves to other people, thinking that we are better or worse then
them, focussing on differances in people, in so many areas... I myself
try sometimes to talk to a wide variety of people... maybe it would be
good if everyone could talk with a really wide variety of people, on a
regular basis...

way.

I know, it can be dangerous, and unproductive, but if you're aware
of it, you might be able to minimize it... for example, talking with %
and brianversion helped just now... I had a clearer sense after talking
with them about who they are, and who I am... at least a little clearer
sense, there's only so much you can know about anyone over the
internet... I think ASD is helpful in making people feel less lonely,
and it is good practise in relating to people in real life...

you can't get a clear sense of anybody from what they write, least of all
from people who are as bad at writing as most people are. you get maybe 10%
of them. the remaining 90% is projection from your own mind: who you want or
need them to be, who you're afraid they might be, who you hate them to be.
so most of the time, when you have strong feelings about someone online,
you're having them about yourself, and when you think you're talking to them
you're actually talking to yourself.
and who I am... at least a little clearer sense
well, yeah. that's what it's about. the rest is just entertainment and a way
to pass time when time needs passing.
there's only so much you can know about anyone over the
internet... I think ASD is helpful in making people feel less lonely,
i see a real problem with letting an online discussion group help you feel
less lonely. it's a potentially dangerous illusion. there really isn't
anyone there.
and it is good practise in relating to people in real life...
possibly, although i see potential danger there as well. some people create
online personalities they only wish they had in real life, and rather than
helping them develop it there, the medium entices them to shift their
reality allegiance to an online fantasy life.

There is a 'here', imo. Jordy and I
spent a pleasant afternoon together last
year and I believe that, if you met him,
you would recognize him as the
'personality' you read here. Not that I
expect you to believe that it's possible
to know me well enough, through asd, to
take my word for it, but there it is.
Jordy is a very thoughtful young man who

i have no reason to believe or disbelieve you. but you're right to put
'personality' in quotes. what we read of each other here are mere fractions
of whole personalities. like i said, about 10% seems right. where we think
we have the whole person, the remaining 90% of them is actually us in
disguise. i don't think i have the whole person of anyone here whom i
haven't met offline. i think i have 10% at best. in some cases, that's
enough to dissuade me from any wish to know them better. in some cases, i
don't care if i do or not. in some cases, i feel it might be pleasant
if i did.

I don't know if I agree with you about
the percentage you assign to what we can
know about each other from reading asd,
but I agree 100% that there's a whole
lotta blank space being filled in by who
we imagine a poster to be. That happens
in physical encounters, too, and also in
our personal gaps in self-knowledge. imo.
My perception of the level of revelatory
writing in asd is what attracts me to
the group. Of course, everyone is
projecting a persona through how he/she
chooses to interact. But that's an
element of encounters in physical space,
too. Your words of caution about the
illusions created are valid, imo. The
only opinion I'm adding is that, in my
experience, there's reason to trust some
level of intimacy that some of us feel
with each other.

Oh and I'll address what you've said here as well ('tis only polite).
I think the main difference between my offline and online personas is one -
I'm probably not quite as aggressive with people in meat reality as I can be
with idiots in ethereality. In daily life I tend to do most of my eye
rolling internally.
One thing I appreciated about usenet for me was that I finally got the
opportunity to express myself in a relatively fearless way. It opened me up
quite a bit (to myself).

me too!!! ASD has for me been a place where I can talk about the
issues that I am thinking about... you can say a lot more on the
internet that you can in real life... though obviously, conflicts can
result, and that can be draining. though it can be very freeing as
well...

let's say, the guy who did his part. for me, romance starts as illusion with
a hope that it will survive the crossing into reality. two people starting
out alone, with imagination and hope. it couldn't have made the crossing
online. nothing can, because there isn't enough of either person there. i
can't live in an illusion for very long. it makes me ill in my mind, and i
don't think i'm alone in this.

thanks Gayle... I enjoyed our meeting too... the way I look at it
is... It would be silly for me to try to be someone else... people
would know instantly that I was not in real life who I was being on
ASD... I have exaggerated and omitted things, as most people probably
have, but I've never lied about any essential things... the way I look
at it, basically, is that I share different sides of myself on ASD,
just as I do in real life... I try to be honest on ASD,"myself", on
ASD... but I also think I share a lot of different sides of myself... I
realized some time around 9/11, that I was only sharing certain sides
of myself... I realized, I think, that I had to share more of myself...
In a way I guess, If we were only sharing one side of ourselves it
would be more strange then sharing many sides... though maybe to strive
to show our best selves is not a bad idea...

Sometimes it seems that other people's personalities kind of merge
and melt into yours, I know it sounds kind of strange, but it does seem
to happen sometimes, or something close to it... people's words, theire
tone, their spelling "mood", their "voice" it kind of starts to stay
with you, and sometimes leaks into your own heart and soul... not
always people you are friends with or like very much... but they seem
to become a part of you, even here on ASD...
i think it's a mistake to invest yourself in an online discussion group
this way.
I know, it can be dangerous, and unproductive, but if you're aware
of it, you might be able to minimize it... for example, talking with %
and brianversion helped just now... I had a clearer sense after talking
with them about who they are
you can't get a clear sense of anybody from what they write, least of all
from people who are as bad at writing as most people are. you get maybe 10%
of them. the remaining 90% is projection from your own mind: who you want or
need them to be, who you're afraid they might be, who you hate them to be.
so most of the time, when you have strong feelings about someone online,
you're having them about yourself, and when you think you're talking to them
you're actually talking to yourself.
I somewhat disagree. Maybe you can't get a complete picture, but you do
get some idea of who people are if you've been here for a while. The
different posters all have different personalities. Nobody would
confuse jordy with RGB, for example. There must be some distinction
that let me know even before I open a post from jordy that it's not
going to read like a post from RGB, and visa versa.
