That's one of the sundry explanations...however, it's not about Gabriel
leaving inpatient, but someone else. Supposedly there was a young boy
who was prodigiously gifted intellectually. He had himself committed to
an institution because his abilities left him unable to relate to the
world. Eventually he realized that he was, in fact, sane, and called his
father to come take him home.
Usually people regard the lyrics as Gabriel's metaphorical explanation
for leaving Genesis. But, like "Stairway to Heaven" and other abstruse
lyrics, it can yield a host of interpretations. Go to
