Object: Phone woes
I can make outgoing phone calls, but can't get anything
incoming. No phone rings, no answering machine. The first
opening for a phone technician is 2 days from now. It's going to
be even quieter than usual.

That's annoying. I hate when the phone doesn't work. At least I
have outgoing.

Wow, I'd like a phone service like that, and would not complain,
or want it fixed.

It was bad when I was trying to call my 14-yr-old to tell him
I'd be really late getting home and got no answer. I forgot to
leave a note saying I might be out when he got home. Luckily, he
doesn't stress out about being alone in the house unexpectedly.

Recently had a situation here at the place I'm staying where the land
line
bill was AU$50, AU$175 all up. Not many calls made. I don't
think a land line is required anymore, cell 'phones are cheaper.
I use wireless internet, and pay AU$20 for my cell phone
per a couple of months.
If you do things on the cheap, it can be around AU$40 a month,
however unsure as to what ADSL internet would add
to that.

I pay $35 a month for my cell, with a very limited number of
minutes and no internet. $50 for the land line with unlimited
dialing for both local and long-distance anywhere in the
country. Given my choice, I'd drop the cell.

When someone calls your number, does it ring on their end or is there a
busy signal or what?

It rings. I tried to call home several times while I was out
today and it rang, but the machine didn't answer. I figured the
cats turned off the machine.

Hmmm.... What happens if you try to call, it rings from that end, and
you pick up the home phone?
or what happens if you make a call out and while on that call, make a
call in. Does it give you a busy signal like it should?

Hmm... Just tried it, and the phone works. It's just the ringers
that don't.

Busy signal.
Somehow, it appears that everything works except the ringer
signal. Thanks for the ideas.

When you call a phone, the phone company increases the voltage on the
line and that's what makes the phone ring. If the phone doesn't get
enough, it won't ring. It's the phone company's problem. They'll fix it.

Called Verizon and finally talked to a person, rather than the
automated trouble system. Turns out there's a problem in my
area, and it'll be fixed no later than Thursday. So much for
the automated system's saying they didn't know what the
problem was. Unfortunately, I might still have to wait two
days for service.
