I'm getting an honest to god real phoneline on Thursday. I called them
and ordered my service today from a payphone. Now I can finally use my
cordless phone I've had for years.

I'd put in a new battery first though.... good chance the one in it is
buggered.... unless you've been charging it periodically?

Go to an electrical parts store and built the pack yourself. I did that
for a friend who had spent a fortune on a Panasonic 5 handset phone
system. All the battery packs were shot after about a year, and they
were just little cheapo 3 AA cell tabbed ni-cads. The whole pack was
only good for 800ma. I used 1700ma replacement cells and he's been happy
as all get out since.
We just got a "Batteries Plus" store here. I stopped by quickly to get
some "76" silver oxide coin cells for my camera. I wanted to spend
another half hour poking around. I know that I'll be headed in with a
SLA cell for an old UPS. They have a replacement for only $15.

Congradulations, its always nice to do something positive for yourself. FYI,
at my phone company they have what's called a lifeline, which has a discount
for those on SSI or who have other low-income qualifications. I only pay
around $3 or $4 for the line itself, but also have other services, like DSL
attached to it.
Here are a couple of references, depending on where you live:

Why do you want a landline?
I read a story in the paper that said that the # of landlines has been
falling for the last 4 years.

I'm sick of my VoIP service shutting me off all the time for what they
say is security purposes. I don't want a cell. There are times I prefer
to be unreachable. Landlines are also cheaper (despite what Vonage has
to say), and a phoneline requires no power from my side, and I can stay
on the phone for several hours without having to worry about a battery
dying.

I'm almost never reachable on my cell phone. I never seem to reach it
before it goes to voicemail, and half the time if I do see it I don't
like answering it.
Good luck staying on your phone for hours when it's a cordless. ;)
I can't believe they say it's shut off for security purposes, they
probably just want to get people off.
You can use your landline to draw juice from the power company!

I had a cell phone before. It was neat, but I didn't like the
technology. It's hard to explain.

I've got other phones too, I've just never used the cordless. I was a
phone phreak in the nineties.

I have no idea. When I try to dial out it says to call customer service,
and the last time I called customer service and tech support they ended
up cancelling my account.

Yea, I know. I once tried to build a trickle battery charger (a
chatrouse box (sp?)) I never got it to really work.

I built something like this

several years ago.

Perhaps I'm just disgruntled. I was fired from a cell phone company for
"distribution of confidential information". I was giving out master
subsity lock codes to friends over the internet. It's their phone, they
should be able to use it how they want. It's the limitations set in
place to restrict full-usage that urks me. It's insulting to customers.

Well, I was working as a war room operator for Sprint in a call center,
running shell scripts and forcasting call and system volumes, which is a
boring job, and I just so happened to have access to the master customer
database and the algorithm used to generate lock codes. So I let a few
people have the codes to unlock their phones, and they told people and I
unlocked those peoples' phones, and one of those people blabbed about
how slunk can make it so you can use SprintPCS phones on Verizon's
network and vica-versa.
So Sprint somehow heard about this, and googled slunk, and then got a
court order to obtain my information from a phreaking forum and matched
it with employee records. So one morning I was getting ready for work,
and got a call from one of my coworkers saying that management was
pissed and that there were feds or something waiting for me to come in
to work. So I never showed up for work there again. A few months later I
got a cerified letter from Sprint saying that I was fired and could face
prosecution for what I did. I just blew it off though. Haven't heard
anything since from them.

I didn't give them real info. They got my IP address though, and must
have had Comcast give up my information. The only reason I know that's
where they got me is because the site admin apoligized to me for giving
