Cool. There's a progression with these pics, in the first one she looks a bit
apprehensive, but by the last one she's quite charmed with the snake.
BTW, how did Zoo Man get the wet stuff on his shirt & shorts? Did one of his
really neat critters pee on him?

wow, i'm impressed that you knew that! i remembered that she was a
cockatoo, but not the rest of it. :)) she's 20 years old and the zoo man
was obviously *very* attached to her. he carried her around on his shoulder
the entire time he was setting up his little show. he said he had just
recently gotten her a "boyfriend" and that they were already very much in
love. <g> he's looking forward to babies in the near future.

I feel like she looks, keep that thing away from me...

she was okay with holding the roach until it started running up her arm.
then she was ready for him to take it off of her. but she didn't sling it
onto the ground. that's what i was really afraid she was going to do!!

yes, she told me that she started shaking when he first began to put the
snake on her. but she had been looking forward to holding it all week, so
she was ready for it.

yes, he had a baby crocodile do that. when he picked it up and held it out
on his arm, it peed all over him. the kids got a real chuckle out of that!
and when he turned around to put something up, there was bird poop all down
his back. :D
ahhh, the hazards of loving critters.
i'm glad you enjoyed the pics, tara. and i'm glad you asked for them
beforehand, otherwise i would not have had my camera handy, and i would have
missed out on taking pics of erin with the madagascan roach, and alyssa with
the python! so it's all thanks to YOU that i have the awesome pics to begin
with!!!

Did I tell you they're my preferred parrot? I adore cockatoos!
They're a wonderful companion animal. They bond so strongly to their human
beings. They're very emotional. I could tell you tales ...
I hope that his cocky isn't going to dump him now that she has a feathered
boyfriend. One reason we have only ONE bird is that if Jester bonds to another
bird, we risk that he will be less affectionate and friendly with us.

Oh lord, I'm sure they did! It goes with the territory for zoo people, I guess,
and it's the kind of thing that kids love.

When we visited Alcatraz, the Parks Guide referred to birdpoop stains as "the
white badge of courage". Well, I have that, for sure, thanks to Jester, and I
also have rings of cat hair around my ankles. I think I would be less human if I
didn't have something to show for my companionship with animals.

Awwww, shucks, I'm glad my silly request ended up helping you capture those
great pics.

i think you might have mentioned it. ;-)

heh...when lisa (my co-teacher) asked the zoo man why the bird didn't ever
fly off his shoulder, he smiled and said, "it's because she loves me." what
was cute was that i think he meant it!

yeah, the zoo man did say that his bird's new boyfriend gets VERY jealous
when he takes her away from the zoo.

that's true. it's annoying, but a fact of life when it comes to having
animals around. a bit like having children. :D

ME TOO!

why thank ya kindly, ms tara. of course, *i* think so, but it's always nice
to hear someone else say it.

That is adorable. I never really thought about birds being "emotional" yet
it makes sense. There's no reason to think they couldn't be, I just never
really pictured them able to love people. OTOH a lot of people are
surprised to know that about rats too and they are as interactive as dogs.
Little mini adorable dogs that will snuggle and kiss and for all intents and
purposes, "appear" to love their owners. I have to get me some new rats. I
really miss having them.

I would love to hear those tales! Have you ever considered writing a book
about them? In the same vein as James Harriot's Best Loved Dogs stories?

They have those all over the UMass campus. The story is that a
grad student released some of his study subjects and that they
travel through the steam system. They get huge!
Sounds like you had a real blast today!
