I wish I had another internet connection. I'd love to get
broadband here. I've got a seperate line for the dial-up
connection now.

You could get another phone line, and then another modem and bond the
connection together to get the combined speed of the two connections.
Whether that's allowed depends on your ISP - but it's one way to get
some extra zip when you're forced to use a modem.
What speed does your modem usually negotiate the connection at?

A secondary internet connection, for use during outages, I don't use the
phone much anyway

i would like a cell phone, since i don't have one. i need the landline
in order to have the dsl, else i'd just get a cell and ditch the
landline. bah.

That's what we've done, except we do have access to a landline if REALLY
needed. I'm connected to the neighbor from wiring that we found had been
left in place from the party line days. So we played around and got it
to work again. So we can call 911 and such if our cell network goes out.
They are also cell users and I don't think they use the land line.

I don't know who you have your landline through, but you can get DSL
only. It's only about ten dollars cheaper though.
