if you haven't already, check out the Alesis micro
www.alesis.com/products/micron/
it's in the same 'affordable' price range as the micro-Korg
and atleast as useful but i think more interesting with the
groove box type stuff plus way better effects processors
including vocoder, etc.. It also has full size keys
way kewl and reckon bound to become a classic
unfortunately, it does not ship with pc editor - yet
.

Great! The demo is too short, unfortunately - it does sound as
good as the Ion though (but do they reach the Waldorf Q or the
Access Virus?). Something like this is what I need (that, or
the new MiniMac with a small controller).
(I never liked the MicroKorg BTW. I hate miniature keys)
As soon as I'm able to get my stash of old keyboards repaired I'm
going to sell them - that should raise enough cash for something like
the Micron, a minimixer, a couple modules (like a Wavestation SR or a
Yamaha TX802) and an outboard processor - all second hand of course. I
might be moving a bit in the following years, maybe Madrid, maybe
Germany, so I want to 'travel light'...
(A better/cheaper/lighter option is to use a laptop and a
microcontroller, but the new wave of cheap/small synths is really much
too tempting...)

yes indeedy - it's a nice little unit. The feedback is that this little
thing actually sounds better than any other VA synth but yep - basically, it
is the same engine as the Ion. Alesis put a lot of effort in the filter(s)
algorithms. Did you notice the keyboard has release sensitivity?
like you, i would also prefer an actual Wavestation module than the Korg
'legacy suite', except i'm really going to try keep the number of boxes low
this time. Just have to rely on softsynths when necessary. While i will
certainly still be using Cu-base, i'm going to try and get by without
investing in lots of cpu grunt. Softsynths will just have to be committed to
audio tracks if cpu loading becomes too much.
am leaning also towards a more compact setup as well, because the pc /daw
(creamware) approach didn't lead to more actual music making for me in any
case. Actually, i'm not interested in tweaking puters anymore. Just wanna
make toons. The daw stuff mostly got sold in the end anyway (to keep the biz
afloat through the worse of my depression). This time i'm going for a simple
and portable setup (the 'just throw it down' approach). Shopping list looks
like this:
Alesis Micron (probably the star of the show)
Zoom MRS-8 portable multi-track / guitar effects
Yamaha DJX Mk.I (if a good one can be found)
GR-33 guitar synth (doubles as a handy JV sound module)
M-Audio Studiophile BX5 Bi-Amplified near field monitors
M-Audio Studiophile SBX (subwoofer to suit)
All quite good value for money. For more ambitious projects :
Cu-Base SX3 on laptop (usually run with 2nd large monitor)
Multi simultaneous record system to suit above (i.e., RME fireface)
Oh.. and a nice little collection of Mics.
btw - for an outboard processor, i can recommend a Korg A-1 if you can get
it cheap. They are fairly unknown but sound nice and clean. Reverb is quite
smooth. Another (even more obscure?) is the Yamaha FX900. especially for
guitar. The one outboard effect i have hung onto is the Lexicon Vortex
delay. An interesting box, and probably very hard to find these days..
it's all good fun
PS - i agree with you about the uKorg. I do like the MS-2000 though, but the
Micron is a much better buy anyway
cheers
.
