What a lot of people do is create a hotmail (or other) address solely for
things like that.
FWIW, on the address that I use for NYTimes, I did not seem to experience
increased spam when I signed up.

I used the yahoo email address that I have for it. I only have it because I
signed up to use the yahoo groups and I automatically got an email account
with yahoo too. Spam is pretty much all I get at that account anyway. I
just have to use some of Yahoo's other services.
I think the penalties for abusing dogs should be much harsher than they are
now and the laws should also be enforced *much better* than is usually being
done currently.
I'm not a big dog person myself. Acutally, I had an *extreme* fear of dogs
as a child and today I still have it somewhat, especially where the
so-called 'nasty' breeds are concerned. That the nasty ones are often the
product of poor care and abuse means nothing to me if I am the one the dog
is going after. But my first instict is to get away from the dog, not beat
him or kill him. However I will use force to defend myself if there is
absolutely no way to avoid the dog or get away from it.

My next-door neighbors have a rottweiler, and a black lab; until last summer
they also had two really sweet, had happy fun loving pit bulls.
Until someone came around and poisoned them both. They were always in the yard
behind the fenced in area. never hurt anyone.

I believe in using force for protection.
I feel sad for people who have a fear of dogs, because I feel like they are
missing so much. One of my greatest joys is to meet dogs that are terrified,
and work with them until they become tail-wagging, kissing furballs. It's time
consuming and involves some knowledge, but it's worth it. Oddly enough, it's
the larger, stereotypical beats that I most love working with. If they are
also aggressive, that's fine with me.
Since I'm no longer an employee, the shelter doesn't allow me to work with
aggressive dogs; but there are many frightened dogs in the adoption area. I'm
not sure how absolutely prudent that is, but it does allow exposure to people.
Yesterday, I began working with a small Australian Shepherd that is a superb
example of a potential "fear biter." She isn't a danger to the visiting
public--because they couldn't get close to her. I had to confine her
yesterday, and to begin our first visit today. By our final visit for today,
she allowed me to hug her. By tomorrow, I think she will begin accepting
people.
I'm sorry for getting off topic: I just wish you could have the enjoyment I
have, from dogs.
Dogs are bred to have certain qualities, some of which are truly difficult, if
not impossible, to suppress. However, nearly 100% of all dogs are what their
guardian makes of them. My Chow Chows comfort people, upon their request, who
come here to the Hospital Guest House.
The hug I will probably remember the longest came from an Akita who put a
front paw on top of each of my shoulders and licked me in the face. She was a
wonderful dog. Entirely safe in every situation? I can't say, of course; but
she didn't have much difficulty getting adopted. Ah, great memories. :-)
Michael
