I liked Red Dwarf, highly original; Blakes 7 really good too,
Hitchhiker's - well I have the books & have re-read them, but actually
he sort of repeated himself too much at the end.
Dr Who - I can't bear to watch now, but the kids love it. I loved it as
a child "exterminate" brill! Farscape was very good but again, just too
many episodes for me to keep watching because the scriptwriters then
regurgitate the plots & the characters become 'soap-like'
Star Trek ? watched a few episodes, IMO some good storylines but didn't
really rate it.
I prefered the repeats of "lost in Space" with that horrible Mr. Smith
& that really cute robot. :-)

Red Dwarf really is a good show. I picked up all the episodes on DVD, I
first saw it years ago when it was on PBS. They're so damn erratic on
when they air shows and then there's the constant pre-empting with their
pledge drives. So I gave up on it until I saw the DVDs were available.
They were also showing Black Adder after Red Dwarf, and I got really
into that show...but again didn't get to fully enjoy it until the DVDs.

That's where I picked up the 'smeg' word; until someone asked me
recently on one of these sites, I thought it was just a made-up word
instead of using a rude one. Typical of me Doh! ;-)

I figured smeg was an actual britishism.

Smegma pyroclasts would be interesting indeed.

What is the prime directive, when it's out there?
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prime_Directive> It's essentially about not
interfering with 'primitive' alien cultures - this being a US fiction,
'primitive' is of course measured solely by machine technology actually in
use.
Supposedly, Star Fleet personnel are expected to lay down their lives and
those of their crew-mates, rather than breach the Prime Directive. Of
course, there are loop-holes about 'previous contamination' and
'accident'.
In practice, almost every episode of Star Trek requires totally ignoring
the Prime Directive; after all, 'just looking, from a long way away'
doesn't give much scope for the firm favourite 'we come in peace BANG
BANG you're dead' plot line. Violent death of and by 'aliens' is a staple
feature of Star Trek.
'Doctor Who' has no 'Prime Directive' and is altogether better for it. (He
is of course, a renegade, so totally free to do his own thing). Not that
there is any lack of violence for him, either.
'Lexx', and another one with a 'living space ship' and a motley crew of
fugitives, whose name I've forgotten, are far superior to Star Trek.
'Blake's Seven' is high on my list too.
Perhaps the best SF broadcasts ever, are the 'Earthsearch' BBC Radio
series by James Follett in 1981/2 (and sometimes repeated, most recently
on BBC7) - and of course, The Hitch-Hikers' Guide to the Galaxy (the
original radio version; the books are as good, but the TV and film
versions aren't). 'Paradise, Lost in Space' is pretty damn good too, and
even 'Journey into Space' (1950s) has a certain creaky charm - and a great
insight into the way middle-class British Chaps thought and spoke in that
era.

I think that is the one; the ship is called Moya, isn't she? It has been
repeated a couple of times in the UK, but not on 'mainstream' channels
:((
