Object: POOP-OUT!!! Please Read and answer survey!
Hi,
I have been on 4 medications that have pooped out on me. Celexa (1
day), Zoloft (4 months), Paxil (6 weeks), Effexor (1 week).
I am getting REALLY frustrated with this, and I am coming to the
conclusion that for some reason (maybe chemically or biologically) my
brain will poop out on meds no matter what. I am REALLY tired of the
SSRI merry-go-round, and I am not willing to go on any more meds if I
know that they are going to poop out on me again.
I am trying to establish a pattern. My hypothesis is that there are
certain people out there who will experience poop-out no matter what
they are given, and there are people out there who will respond with
5+ years to meds.
Can everyone who has experienced poop-out - please reply to this email
and list all your meds and the time duration before poop-out? Please
do not list any meds that you discontinued because of side effects or
no effect at all. STRICTLY poop-out meds. I would be really curious to
know if there are any people out there who have pooped-out prematurely
(ie. less than 4 months) on a number of meds, but have found one med
where they have had success for over a year or so.
There seems to be no scientific data in this area, so maybe a
newsgroup survey will shed some light on this phenomena.
My list:
Celexa (1 day)
Zoloft (4 months)
Paxil (6 weeks)
Effexor (1 week)
.

You know, you shouldn't discard Celeza and Effexor just because they haven't
worked "fast enough"! Most meds take at least 2-3 weeks to "settle in" and
work effectively, (usually 4 -6 weeks though.) Why di you decide that you
can't take Zoloft or Paxil?

They can poop out. I recently experienced this with Trazodone, and old-line
anti-depressant, which stopped working. I'm trying Remeron now, and am also
posting something new about this.

Ditto.
I tried Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Wellbutrin. For me, they did more harm than
good.

I agree with Heather and Velvet - you didn't give any of those meds a chance
to start working; in my experience it's at least a month before you get any
idea of what benefits you might get. Side-effects show up sooner, but
usually fade somewhat (or you get used to them).
Your doctor should have explained this when prescribing them.

GUYS!!!
You didn't understand my question! I am not talking about how LONG it
takes for them to start working. I am talking about ONCE they start
working how long they work for.

They can't STOP working till after they START working and you didn't
give most of them time to even start.

I'm not sure your definition of poop-out is the same as mine. I consider
it poop-out when a med works well for a time and then stops working.
Your 1 day and 1 week trials can't be considered poop-outs (according to
my understanding of the term) and IMO the Celexa and Effexor weren't
given a fair chance. The six-week mark for quitting Paxil was premature
too, I think. That's around the time that it should start working. You
need to give the drugs time to build up in your system.
To answer your question, I've been on Zoloft for 15 years or so. There
was a time when it did poop out on me. I don't remember when but it was
many years after I began taking it. I went to the maximum dosage and
even beyond for awhile - until I could no longer tolerate the side
effects - and then went back down to a normal dose. Eventually it just
started working again. This was all under medical guidance.
