read your journal.
I'm curious what you refer to as "basic math". I got so far as differential
and multivariable calculus before my brain got broked on it, and I just
simply didn't find it fun any more..
...maybe it was just the screaming baby + math/astro/physics-homework mixture
that simply drove a spike in my brain..

ah, multivariate calc and linear algebra. i need to review *everything*
i've learned and then go from there. i am currently working through 3000
pages of miscellaneous garbage.
honestly engineering gives me a headache, and i should read more fiction.
to that end, i picked up a Vonnegut novel the other day. almost done with

i'm not terribly impressed with him, but he one of the premier authors of
the 20th century. i find him somewhat like Orwell, but a better
storyteller. Orwell has good ideas. Vonnegut has good execution.
again i don't read much fiction, so elegy would know more.
i will wait to give a full opinion when i've read Mother Night. i loved the

I saw him interviewed recently on some talk show, Charley rose
maybe... He was very interesting... maybe I'll read him someday, after
I get through the 50 or so books that are on my list now... I know that

packrat,
some stuff that i have bought and is on my reading list:
Vineland by Thomas Pynchon
Finnegans Wake by James Joyce
Naked Lunch by Burroughs
to be honest, i've been reading mainly fluff and non-fiction. i like
Palahniuk (Fight Club) and will buy more of that. he's fun, but perhaps
overrated.
Vonnegut is very engaging. he holds your interest very well. but i like
more overblown prose.
i tried to read Foucalt's Pendulum, but gave up. i may try some other Eco
works instead. the general impression i get from Eco is "i'm way smarter
than you!". i don't like to be patronized.

packrat, i don't like anti-intellectualism. Orwell wrote for the crowd, but
he is quite boring sometimes. i prefer beautiful, over-done prose.
i haven't read all of Pynchon's works, but i will. except for that Mason &
Dixon one.
i have only read a little Joyce. he is considered the epitome of modern
fiction. very self-aggrandizing. very cerebral. but way overdone. i may
make it through Finnegans Wake one day. but you really need several FW
guides to really get much out of it. or be a polyglot.

I want to challenge myself as well... I love Agatha Christis, for
example, but it's really easy reading... I need more of a challenge...
for one thing, I'm planning to read books that I was supposed to read

yeah, I miss algebra.. ..it was always a breeze to me. I remember in
highschool getting 100% in alg. 99% trig. 99% stats. Uni, got 95% in
linear alg/matrices.. ..then calculus became a quickly sliding slope for me
and defeated my love of math. not that I don't appreciate it, or anything..
...and not that I don't think it's over my head in any way.. ..I just don't
think I want to go through the motions anymore.. ..let someone else plug it
into code and I'll make use of it's power.. ..but ***** the migraine of
writing endless pages of equations. and really, getting nowhere where
anyone else hasn't been before. I'm not smart enough to add anything to the
world of math or physics.. ..I used to think I was, thought it was my
destiny actually.. ..and maybe at one time it was.. ..or maybe I was just
high.. ..genius doesn't tend to blossom in early-on broken spirits
regardless. But that's my own retro-active justification of my position I
suppose..
now burried in the most cognitively regressive activity.. ..toddler
management and entertainment.
anyway, I miss doing astronomy labs.. ..mostly just miss access to the
$15,000 telescopes..

I often have the fantasy of taking algebra again these days, as well

i stopped doing all homework except for when i had time during class. i was
supposed to read a ton of books, but opted for Cliff Notes. so my weakest
grades were in English, because i couldn't bluff as well as in math class.
i was at the top of the class in physics, because it was all application of
algebra, which i learned in 7th grade anyway. calc based physics and difeqs
at Stuveysant would have kicked my *****.
track also sucked up 2 hours a day, clubs sucked up one hour a day, i played
basketball for 4 years, i had no time to study even if i wished to.
i assume no one else studied either. bviously in college, you need to
study, unless you go to some rinky-dink ***** in British Columbia.
Persent couldn't handle Emag I, much less III.

Alvin, check out the Dover publications books. they have entry-level
(algebra only) books on relativity, graph theory, and other topics. i'm
ordering a couple of game theory books from them (actually amazon.com cause
it's cheaper). one is semi-technical, the other is simplified.
it's ok to self-study and avoid very big equations.
also Prime Obsession is very good. it covers Big O, big sigma, big pi, zeta
function, and series.
oh, and a tip, some of the "greatest novels of the 20th century" are
actually *****. i could write better material while i'm on the crapper.

electro,
some people would say that all undergrad math (analysis, differential
geometry, topology) are basic maths. i dunno. obviously some of the same
topics are covered in grad school, just much more rigorously (e.g.
graduate-level algebra and higher arithmetic).
