huh? what's "here a quick one" mean?
I've taken prednisone, it works, but it also made me over emotional and
subject to severe anger fits.

That's what I meant, indeed. I misspelled "hear" as "here." I'd love
to share a quick story related to my experience with Prednisone.
Happy ending and all. Any listeners?
Is the lack of capital letters in most people's posts in alt.support
depression itself a sign of laziness and depression? Hope I'm not
stepping on toes. Sometimes depression means you're ornery.

pred added to my depression and made me very jumpy. i put on a ton of
weight as well. it is also bad for you bones and eyes.
it does however work wonders if you really need it. i was put on it for
colitis. while it got me into remission from the colisis .. i had so many
side effects i wonder if it was worth it.

I've taken cortisone series occasionally for years due to horrible
allergies, and my moods have always been this messed up, with or without
cortisone.

A quick comment? Yes, either you are not taking it at all
or only topically. Otherwise you would have some unpositive
experiences, period. Psychiatric effects are especially
unpostitive.
If you are taking corticosteroids I sincerely hope it under medical
supervision and if not you may be in for some very unpleasant surprises.
You may be in for these even if you are taking this Rx as prescribed and
the Rx is indicated. Prednisone is a notoriously risky Rx.
Its late I only have time borrow some words from E and L on
a sibling NG:
************* begin quotes from ppl on a.s.d.m. ******************
Prednisone is a synthetic corticosteroid, with an effect somewhat similar to
the natural hormone, cortisone. The use of prednisone is one of a lesser of
evils, cost/benefit analysis decision. It is able to powerfully suppress
inflammation, for example, but it also profoundly alters a host of other
natural processes. For that reason, prednisone is generally used cautiously.
There is a very clear association between the onset of psychiatric symptoms
and the use of prednisone. Psychosis, mania, and profound depression are all
possible, with an incidence of at least 5%. For subjects susceptible to mood
disorders, I'd suspect the percentage to be very much higher.
The prednisone can shift one's chemistry into profound oxidative stress,
which via a variety of feedback processes, gets "locked in". That can make
the mood disorder quite chronic, and treatment-resistant. It has been seen,
for example, that steroid-induced depression is not amenable to treatment
with tricyclics. It is not known how this depressive syndrome differs from
other similar syndromes, if it is different at all, but non-responsiveness
to tricyclics does suggest something different is going on.
Prednisone is extremely well documented with causing a wide variety of
serious psychiatric changes. Prednisone can cause everything from
severe depression, to mania and hypomania, to psychosis. Reactions to
prednisone are highly variable.
Some doctors dont like to talk about or admit prednisone can do this
sort of thing to some susceptible individuals. Other docs will be the
first ones to admit prednisone can totally wreck people people. Its highly
variable...depends on the doctor to a large extent.
