Prothiaden/Abilify combo |
I've written on this topic before, but after having a long talk with my
pharmacist this morning, I thought I'd ask around again for some more free
advice from anyone with personal experience.
I'm being treated for schizophrenia and major depression with elements of
social phobia and panic disorder. At the moment my meds are Zyprexa
(olanzapine) 10mg and Prothiaden (dothiepin) 100mg, all taken as a single
night-time dose. [I was on Zoloft (sertraline), but that caused erectile
dysfunction (as also did other SSRIs I took in the past) - when I asked my
doctor to cease the Zoloft, his first reaction was "What does that matter -
you're single". He's a cranky old bugger, and a Christian, but I'm tied to
him by close family bonds].
Anyway, my symptoms are mostly under control except for still a little
agoraphobia. But my weight has ballooned from ~72kg to ~100kg (158lb to
220lb). I'm 192cm (6'3") so that gives me a Body Mass Index of 27
(overweight), while my old pre-Zyprexa BMI was 20 (low end of acceptable
range). And I have been riding a bike daily for exercise, even though I've
felt tired. So I'm I think understandably eager to stop the Zyprexa.
My pharmacist guardedly recommended that I ask my doctor to increase my
Prothiaden dosage to 150mg at night, and switch from Zyprexa to Abilify
(aripiprazole) 20 or 30mg. Keep up the exercise and hopefully the weight
will come down and the tiredness be less of a problem.
I see my doctor on Thursday, so I'd appreciate any input before then.

Any med that causes serious weight gain should be changed to something else.
Good luck,
