Seeing-eye dogs have been around for a long time. The Lions Clubs movement
in Australia trains "hearing dogs."
Now there are "Psychiatric Service Dogs" as well, according to a podcast
from the Depression Support Alliance:
http://www.softconference.com/dbsa/mp3.asp?SID=111691&ID=118320
(The URL didn't change with the page. You can always start by clicking on
the icon at http://www.dbsalliance.org/
These "podcasts" are simply MP3 files. There is no associated XML file, so
you have to play or download them individually.)

In the US, there is a movement to allow psychologists to prescribe
medication, like psychiatrists do. The trend must be more advanced in
Australia, if dogs are now doing this!

The URL is for the USA. Australia now has registered psychologists, whose
fees are claimable from our private health funds (but not from Medicare.)
Victoria where I live, first did this when Scientology was going around
with its E-meter. Scientology was then outlawed, but that is no longer the
case, and I see that Scientology is accepted as a Church by Marriage
Encounter, a project of the Catholic Church. In the Nicole Kidman case,
they replied that the person claiming all kinds of vengeance on Nicole has
been expelled from the Church some time before (he was quoted as a "former
member" - not very high authority anyway,) so they seem to have cleaned up
their act.
But in Australia, only doctors are allowed to prescribe medication. Some
psychotropic medication can be obtained only with the authority of a
registered psychiatrist. The qualification for a psychiatrist used to be a
member of the ANZCP, but mine has only a diploma in psychiatric medicine,
on top of her basic qualifications as a doctor. I see so many complaints
that in the U.S. doctors are inaccessible, that making prescriptions more
easily available, may be a workable alternative.
Here, they are trying to make some simple MRI scans available on a G.P.'s
authority. At present, a G.P. can make the appointment, but a specialist's
authority is required.

i really like the idea of psychiatric service dogs. there are a number
of organizations becoming involved with them, and i think that they
can be a huge benefit to people with all kinds of psychiatric issues.
it's amazing what dogs can be taught to do.
