Well looks like I'm going to need to have someone come on out and have
a look at the puter.
Actually it's my daughter's and I spent all week-end trying to fix the
problem but it's beyond me. (it's a networking problem and one of the
connections on her puter is down for no apparent reason so it won't
share files or print).
I wonder how much they charge for a call out fee these days?
I've got two companies that I will call this morning and see what the
damage is.
I've been spoiled in the past because my nephew usually does all my
puter repairs and upgrades but he lives too far away now.

You know, I think I might take a class in computer maintenance one of
these days. I know I would enjoy it and it could help me out when
things like this happen.

Can she get on the internet? One thing you could do would be to open up
the networking control panel, right-click on the network icon and
choose repair connection. Am not too sure what else to suggest without
more details...

Yes she can get the internet on the other connection (she has two
connections to my computer). I wrote a detailed response to Frank in
another post. I just can't think what else to do. Thanks for you help.

Maybe it needs a IPX\SPX protocol.

They'll probably charge you about 1/4 of what a new cheapy machine ($400)
would cost. It's an unfortunate problem, people screw their systems up with
spyware or just muck up Windows and then just decide the hassle isn't worth
it and buy another.
I'm going to take a guess (from what you describe) that it's spyware at
what's called the windows layered socket protocol. Trying to clean up after
spyware is such a hassle that it can take more time to try and clean things
up than to re-install.
Did your computer come with a restore CD or something? Copy your data off
and reinstall, having somebody come out to you will be much more expensive
than it's worth. It'd probably be cheaper to ship it to your nephew even!

Local Area Connection 2. A cable is unplugged. That's the error
message.
It's run by NVIDIA nForce Network Controller.
I updated the drivers to that one yesterday and still no joy.

Download the drivers so you have them if needed after this...
Uninstall both local area connections and reboot, your computer should
redetect and reinstall then.

Her computer will not allow me to delete those connections. I disabled
LAN 2 then enabled it again, still with the same error message and no
connection.

Oh gosh I hope it doesn't cost that much!

I run adaware every single day on her computer and get the updates
every day too. It's clean as far as I can see. I also have Norton (I
know, it's pretty useless) and run AntiVirus Guard, plus I downloaded
TDS-3 and ran it through the system as well. It's all clean.
What is happening is that one of the connections on her puter is
saying that the cable is unplugged and this just isn't so. She can
connect to the internet no worries, it just won't print or share
files. I have reloaded the printer drivers, I have renamed her
computer, I have checked and re-checked the cable but it just won't
connect.
I have tried to make another connection but it won't pick up the
printer name on my computer.
I can't repair the connection because it just isn't sending any data
through that point.
I can't think of anything else to do and keep in mind that I am a
complete novice and got all this stuff off help groups on the internet
and of course microsoft help on the puter.

Well you know, that's worth a thought. Only thing is we need it fairly
urgently as her Uni starts next week.
I'm sure it's just a minor problem, but I can't seem to get at it. The
one thing I can think of is that the connection to the card insidde of
the unit could be loose or something, but I don't know a think about
the insides of a computer, so I must leave that well alone.

Are you trying to connect to a shared printer or a shared folder on another
computer on your own home network?
If so, then it's probably a software firewall on her machine. We have a
product at my company and we have all sorts of problems with
Norton/ZoneAlarm (unless configured properly they block the Windows ports
for file and printer sharing by default)...people are running with a router
and network address translation (NAT), so they already have effectively the
same protection. But that doesn't stop them from getting scared by marketing
departments into Norton Internet Security....
Go to Start->Run->type CMD, click OK->in the command window type "ipconfig"
If your address is 192.168.X.X or then you're already on your own little
"private" internet with your internet router doing just that, routing.
I'm willing to bet that if you're running a local software firewall and you
disable it, then the problem will disappear.

I'm wondering if there may be a cable some where between you're and
hers that has become disconnected. Another thing you might check would
be to uninstall the network card, then reinstall it and add it to the
windows profile again. You might try going as far as putting the card
in another slot, but uninstalling and reinstalling the driver should do
the same.

Oh gosh I hope it doesn't cost that much!

I'm going to take a guess (from what you describe) that it's spyware at
what's called the windows layered socket protocol. Trying to clean up after
spyware is such a hassle that it can take more time to try and clean things
up than to re-install.

Did your computer come with a restore CD or something? Copy your data off
and reinstall, having somebody come out to you will be much more expensive
than it's worth. It'd probably be cheaper to ship it to your nephew even!

It's HIGHLY unlikely that you have anything loose, network-wise. Every
implementation of the nForce chipset(s) put the ethernet hardware directly
on the motherboard. Back around by where you plug in the keyboard and such.
If it was a loose cable then it wouldn't work at all.
Think about it logically. If data will move from the internet onto the
machine, then the little electrons are moving around just fine.
No amount of cabling wiggling will fix a software problem.

yes that's true. I just looked at my machine and my connection to the
internet with my service provider is up and running and the LAN 3
connection is up and running and doing fine. I clicked repair but
there was no movement on her end.
It must be a software problem her end on her LAN 2 connection but be
buggered if I can figure it out.

Do you have the disk that came with the network card, that would be
great, or you could go to the manufacturer's website and download the

Because it was sudden and the internet connection is working perfectly
between the two computers.

Forgot to say that I am using Microsoft Windows XP. Please forgive me
as I don't know very much about this stuff.

Why don'tyou post the problem in detail (what OS, what kind of network
connection, etc.) and we'll all try to help. The most probable outcome is
that you'll fix the problem all right. Or, instead of wasting your money,
post to the suitable(s) Microsoft groups. They will be able to help you.

Thanks Teil! I have posted some details in a couple of other posts,
but maybe I could take it to the microsoft groups and see if they
could help. I didn't think about that, although I have been sorting
through help groups and such all weekend trying to fix this danged
problem.
It would be good if I could avoid such a cost that's for sure.
