Following a discussion about degrees of physical pain (see
http://groups.google.co.uk/group/misc.kids.pregnancy/browse_thread/thread/5d09776a8f7159e7/fb52f3b2203598ad?hl=en#fb52f3b2203598ad)
I started to think. Yesterday I was very depressed and a friend had a
headache. I was massively unsympathetic because I've never had a
headache that has hurt more than depression. It seems completely
ridiculous to ask a simple "Which hurts more..." question when
discussing emotional pain but ludicrous as it sounds, somebody
somewhere must have tried to construct a measure for quantifying
emotional pain at some point. For example psychologists frequently ask
patients to keep mood diaries, something which I have always found
difficult. Obviously pain is subjective but is there a standard for
quantifying psychological discomfort?
