Racism = evil |
x-no-archive: yes
I used to think that racism was archaic, for the most part, that only
kooks were still racist. Now I read about comments from people like
Paris Hilton, and it makes me ill. I've heard vile comments coming from
non-celebraties too, "normal" people in frats and sororities. These are
people you stand next to while grocery shopping or driving your car, and
you'd never know it because they don't vocalize their thoughts in
public. They are happy shiny pretty people and they skate. But it's
there, yup, it's still there.

i think you're right about that. trouble is, there are more of them all the
time. i was watching the 1990 remake of "night of the living dead" recently.
you know, where zillions of "kooks" climb out of their graves and lurch
around looking for live people to eat? i found myself thinking, "my god,
this is a documentary." (although it's possible that i've just been around
usenet too long.)
i guess what i'm trying to say is that "evil" is such a strong, harsh word.
i wonder if we couldn't just say
racism = dead with an active brain stem

I'm going to withdraw from society as much as possible. Too many shitty
assholes out there. You can't shoot them, so the next best thing is to
avoid them.

That will only make you bitter. The rest of the world will still go on.
There will still be assholes but there will also be nice folks and
unless you interact with others you'll never know the difference. I'm
not AT ALL the textbook example of outgoing individual. I try to work on
maintaining a balance. I know that my druthers would be to withdraw
because interaction is tiring, often unrewarding and saps my strength.
I'm not outgoing, but I *know* it's what I need to try for
I think it probably suits me fairly well that I'm a large guy who
doesn't exude an aura of "hey, shucks, I like ya!" So I don't get messed
with by the twits of the world. I do however make sure to return respect
and I do what I can to interact positively with the individuals who live
at a level that I would find to be uncomfortably positive.
I just try to make sure that the dude abides.

I don't mean complete isolation, I know that's not good. I also know
there are decent people out there. It just gets tiring dealing with
this ***** sometimes. Every time I leave my house, I feel like I'm
stepping into a war zone. I'm always waiting for the next shell to drop.
I've been alone most of my life, I mean, it's why I'm a janitor. I
overtly sought out this work, I wanted something where I could work alone.
I think it probably suits me fairly well that I'm a large guy who

This part went over my head, I'm not sure I understand what you're
trying to say. I don't want to live in a world where I have to walk
around like I'm a bad ***** so people don't ***** with me. I'm a 40 yr old
balding white guy, I was kinda hoping I would be past that point by now.
People say I look young, maybe that's part of it. The place where I
get my haircut, they were shocked when I told them I'm 40, they thought
I was in my late 20's/early 30's. I mean, after that Costco event, I go
into Costco and look at all the normal people walking around doing their
thing. Do they have monkeys scream at them too? Or do the monkeys see
an easy target and ***** with me specifically? It would just be nice to
be able to go to the store without wondering if I should be carrying a
gun, or if a car full of 20-somethings is going to slow down, honk at me
and starting hooting and waving and laughing. It gets a bit tiring, I
was hoping they'd stop when I hit middle age.

i experience prejudice personally whenever i see it expressed generally,
against anyone or any group. because i live and work in one of the most
diverse communities in the world, there's not much expressed around here.
it's one reason why i stay. but if i spoke up every time i came across
bigotry and racism on the internet, i'd never get a moment's rest. and it
would all be for nothing, less than a finger in the *****. ten years ago this
medium put a microphone in everybody's hand, and it amazed me how much of
this bilge came pouring out. how much it was of what mr. and ms. humanity
had to say to the world: their fear and hatred of others, their rage. i
understood vividly what it was that hitler and mussolini tapped into, what
all the fascist movements of britain, europe and north america tapped into
between the wars, and i've been more anxious about the future since then.

I don't think that is real racism. I think it stems from what the younger
generations heard from their parents growing up. They mouth the same
sentiments either in anger or just to push someone's buttons. I don't think
most of them are really racist.

An actual belief that one race is better than another, and a pattern of
behavior - not just angry, button-pushing words now and then - to back it
up.
Not hiring, or even being friends with, a person because their skin is a
different color is racism. Mouthing a racist epithet because a person of
color cut you off in traffic isn't necessarily racism.
Racist dialog is in everyone's head because of what they heard from older
generations, television, and the movies. But I don't think the vast
majority of the younger generations actually believe any of it.

Sorry to hear your having a rough time there. I can sometimes have random
thoughts go through my mind that don't seem to make any sense. Maybe you
should mention this to a psychiatrist. How is your situation there? Has it
improved any? I know you're thinking of moving, it may help some, but you
may still experience some difficulties until things start to even out some.
