You might try looking for the manufacturer of the drive on the web. You can
DL HD diagnostic software from the manufacturer (at least with Maxtor and
Western Digital) that will fit on a floppy and will generate specific
diagnostic codes for that drive. Then you can call them up and give them the
codes and arrange for a memorial service. Seriously though, its a quick way
non-intrusive way to establish if the drive is fried.

My pc is revving. I don't know how else to describe. The hard drive
starts to whir, like it's revving an engine, then immediately lets go
and stops spinning, then immediately starts to rev again.
whiiiiiiiiirrrrr
whiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrr
whiiiiiiiirrrrrrr
Each whir sound is goes up in pitch then down.
I'm ready to take a hammer to it. Any suggestions? My blood pressure
is through the roof right now. If it wasn't so expensive, it would most
definitely be pieces in our driveway right now.
