They had an article in Sunday's NY Times style section about how often
when people are offended by a person's behavior in a public
place, they don't speak out about it...The writer of the article did
speak out,on an airplane, when kids were misbehaving. He said it was
brave of people to do this...At work this morning I was unhappy with
the way a coworker was speaking to me.I was assertive, and spoke up
about it,and now I think the situation is better...I definatly think
I've gotten more assertive in many ways, which I think is a good
thing...It's just hard to know sometimes when it's better to be
assertive and speak out and when it's better to just ignore the
problem...Like when I was on a bus a couple of years ago and that kid
was making alot of noise with his stereo...

I've been with my sister, a grade school teacher, when obnoxious brats were
being obnoxious in a store. Sometimes Sis forgets that it's not school and
she's blurted out "All right, Knock It Off, you guys!" in her stern
teacher's voice. She was embarrassed about using her "school" voice and tone
outside of school but it was effective!

If you want the problem to continue it is always better to ignore it.
