Re;Maybe I should talk about politics less often |
I think in a sense,Naomi and Luna are right that politics can have as
much to do with depression as anything else.I'm sure political issues
upset a great many people here besides me,no matter what their
political beliefs are.and, politics is ceretainly no more off topic
then many other subjects discussed here on a daily basis. However,I
don't always spoiler my posts.maybe everyone should spoiler posts that
are generally more controversial then other subjects.
I agree with Naomi that it is to a large extent an emotional thing
with me.I know Thor has pointed out a number of times that we become
emotionally invested in what our beliefs are,and so we post more from
emotion then strictly being fair and open to all beliefs...

The fact is that I don't know what's true (or not) about you at all.
I do think politics is pretty on-topic, though.

A lot of the way we're treated, medically, at work, and generally is or
could be affected by politics and politicians. Maybe 'should' be
affected. Maybe politicians should be harassed to do something about the
availability and cost of services, of support, of reducing the stigma
that makes people post anonymously and x-no-archive in hope (against the
evidence) that no one will be able to use what they say against them.
And that's just the obvious, direct relevance. We talk about our lives -
politics is part of life. Part of my depressed life is that I get much
angrier about things that go on in the world than I used to. Politics,
again. And economics, which lets firms buy politicians in various
countries, who return favours...
OTOH, there's a lot of hypocrisy about the political arguing that goes
on here that really annoys me, and that I could do without. But I can
avoid it, mostly; look for threads with the usual suspects posting in
them and mark them read. Of course, that's diplomacy - a very different
kettle of fish, and something we never talk about. :)

It's not just that when you're posting about politics, you're posting an
emotional state rather than a rational state. It's that when people are
posting from an emotional state, they're are actually fighting about
more than the political issue at hand.
An example is a story wombn told me about a fight she had with an ex.
They had a huge fight erupt over how to cook the spaghetti for dinner
that night. It was a very big, emotional fight. On the surface, they
were arguing over the spaghetti. But the fight really didn't have much
to do with the spaghetti, it was emotional and big because there were a
lot of other unaddressed issues underneath. The spaghetti became a
symbol to tack on all their emotional baggage.
I think this happens with political beliefs, esp. here. Not saying that
there aren't substantive reasons for people's beliefs. I'm just saying
that in some cases, to whatever degree, I think a person's personal
identity gets defined in part by their political identity. So if
someone attacks there political beliefs, they're actually, unknowingly,
attacking that person *personally*.

It is the other way round. Some people will feel attacked
personally if somebody disagrees with them on just about anything.
Or if somebody else is not a die-hard fan of that celebrity which they love.
These 'some people' then frequently will not have much arguments
to back up their position, or they will quickly get into an emotional
state where they do not use argumentation any more. These
'some people' will then use ad hominems, such as calling the
other guy a 'nazi', or a 'socialist', or just about anything else.
Maybe Godwin's law should be extended to Stalin and socialism.
If you call your opponent a socialist, or a communist,
you have automatically conceded defeat.
