Smaller babies prone to depression (and anxiety), study finds |
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - "Plump babies may really be happier babies,
Canadian and British researchers reported on Monday in a study that
found people who had a low birth weight were more likely to have
depression and anxiety later in life."
"Adverse conditions in the womb that interfere with a baby's growth
may also cause brain differences, the researchers report in the
December issue of Biological Psychiatry."

Thanks for posting this Rose, I found it very interesting.
I was a low birth weight baby and very small, but reasonably "plump" (by
the looks of the pictures I've seen). I was about 3 or 4 pounds at
birth (my Mum will know exactly, but I don't want to ask, I don't want
her to think I'm blaming her for my mental health) and born 3 weeks
premature, but had no other problems and I'm not sure of any "adverse
conditions" in the womb. My Mum smoked throughout both her pregnancies,
but they didn't tell women not to in the 70's and 80's (not that she
would have stopped even if they did, it's killing her and she doesn't
care, she's too addicted).
I often keep an eye out for these type of studies, for my own interest,
given my low birth weight. My Mum and Grandma keep a close eye out for
any studies showing long term effects of the medication my Grandma used
in 1950 when she was pregnant with my Mum to prevent her having
(another) miscarriage. Luckily neither of us have found anything
conclusive that means were in for major health problems.

That's curious, my mum smoked as well.

Mine too.
Women who smoke tend to have smaller babies, so it's quite possible that the
causative factor is nicotine's effect on a developing fetus.

I was never really plump, however became what I considered fat
during the 1990s. I'm now quite thin and like it that way.
I don't think I've got the same strength I used to though.
I certainly think fat healthy babies might be work out OK,
however it's after birth that things might turn pear shaped
over the years.
I don't know, did I become depressed becoming thin?
No way in hell I'm putting on weight.

I was a plump baby so it must have been adverse conditions in the
womb. Great! Another reason to blame my mother! ;-}
