SOFT DRINKS CAUSE OBESITY IN CHILDREN
Gabe Mirkin, M.D.
A study from Harvard shows that of soft drinks may be responsible for
the doubling of obesity in children over the last 15 years.

From 1991 and 1995, adolescent boys increased their intake of soft

drinks from an average of 345 mL to 570 mL. Most soft drinks are
sweetened with sugar and not artificial sweeteners. Dr. David Ludwig of
the Boston Children Hospital showed that school children drinking eight
ounces or more of soft drinks daily consume 835 calories more than
those avoiding soft drinks. That means that children who drink soft
drinks loaded with sugar eat much more food than those who avoid soft
drinks. Either those taking sugared drinks lack the same restraint on
foods, or sugared drinks cause a rise in insulin that makes adolescents
more hungry, causing them to eat more. Children who drink soft drinks
regularly are fatter and presumably more likely to develop diabetes
later in life.
Lancet 2001;357:505-08. "Relation between consumption of
sugar-sweetened drinks and childhood obesity: a prospective,
observational analysis" Dr. David Ludwig from the Children's Hospital
Boston and colleagues at the Harvard School of Public Health.

my younger son drinks, at most, one soda per week.
unfortunately, that's not what's causing his weight problem.
my older son's built like his dad. 5'9" and 110 lbs at age 12.

Is there a soft drinks lobby? The world is far too strange.
That's right up there with tobacco companies trying (or even thinking they
should even have to try) to convince people that smoking is safe.
I'm sorry but... and keep in mind I'm a smoker, I don't care if you are

Was that before or after laudanum (opium in alcohol)? Great for keeping
the bairns quiet, or not going to the dentist. Britain grew all its own
opium, and you could pop into the chemist for a penny roll of it. Mind
you, a penny was a penny back then, and Norfolk farmers were the biggest
consumers, being able to afford it, and having all those sheep to worry.

I've heard, seriously, that some of the better marathon runners out there
are ex-smokers. Lung capacity (and other factors) increases to compensate
for the decreased efficacy of the lungs oxygen absorption. Take away the
cigarettes and work out, and enjoy the benefits of better lungs. I'm sure
this only applies to short-time smokers who quit.

It sounds just plausible. Still, given the price of cigarette here,
training at altitude would be a safer and cheaper option. Package
holiday to Tenerife for peanuts, then run around up by Mount Teidi - it
had me gasping for breath, and I was just trying to climb a staircase!

People come up to my area for altitude training, you get more red blood
cells to adjust to a higher altitude. The air actually feels thicker to
me at sea level and I can run around doing all sorts of physical work
with a lot more endurance than otherwise. I really love it.
Driving my cars at sea level is a lot more fun too. You get used to the
high altitude performance and then it's like a kick in the ***** to a mule
when you're rocketing around by the ocean in the same car.

the first person in history that ever smoked or the last... there is

no

way in hell you could have EVER thought that sucking hot smoke into

your

lungs was a safe thing to do.

Strengthens the lungs, you know. Doctors recommend it. (Both were used
in adverts!)

I've heard, seriously, that some of the better marathon runners out

there

are ex-smokers. Lung capacity (and other factors) increases to
compensate
for the decreased efficacy of the lungs oxygen absorption. Take away

the

cigarettes and work out, and enjoy the benefits of better lungs. I'm
sure
this only applies to short-time smokers who quit.

I first noticed the thinner air out here ,
when I started riding my bike ,
the slightest hill and I'd get pooped ,
it took a while to figure out why ,
then I realized I was use to riding at ,
about 600 feet above sea and now I'm 3,000 above ,
it also explained to me why all the guys in BC ,
win all the mountain bike competition races
.

Yep... but I don't need to spend grant money to determine whether

Is there a soft drinks lobby? The world is far too strange.

That's right up there with tobacco companies trying (or even thinking

they

should even have to try) to convince people that smoking is safe.

I think the BC guys might be using a combination approach to victory.
Living at altitude and then quitting their "smoking" for race day.
Awhile back I was out on Catalina island with some accomplices. I was
charging up and down the hills, enjoying the gorgeous views and even
though the locals I was with were certainly more into fitness than I was
the altitude was a pretty effective advantage.
I can only imagine what would happen if some of those Peruvians who live
up at insane altitudes could do. Live up around 8000' and then run laps
around EVERYBODY at sea level.
