Hi,
I'm looking for some suggestions and ideas, and I'd greatly appreciate
it. I've been unemployed since last Tuesday. I have to admit that I
really don't have any marketable skills, I don't have a college degree
of any kind, and I worked construction over the last 12 years in south
central, Texas, as a laborer installing rebar reinforcement (worked
for a relative) into residential concrete foundations. But I wouldn't
call this much of a "skill" and besides, the illegal aliens have
completely swamped these jobs and that has made it very difficult to
find another one, for obvious reasons.
Anyway, I've been going around and putting in a lot of job
applications. I've applied at a couple of local Wal-marts, Target, a
couple of Home Depots, and I've contacted and put in applications with
several construction companies trying to get another job utilizing my
former "skill". So far, things have turned up empty, and besides,
there might be a problem even if get another job doing concrete
reinforcement, because the truth is that I don't speak Spanish
fluently, and this will be a problem for me in interacting and working
with other co-workers...who are most likely all illegal.
Believe it or not, but today when I placed an application with a
concrete reinforcement company, the secretary who handed me the
application could barely speak any english, and this was the
secretary(!) as she was from mexico. Now, if that's any indication of
their work-force, how would I manage to work with them in a crew if
just about none of them speak english? This will be a real problem,
and I'm going to address this to the foreman(well, I guess he speaks
english..LOL), if they call me tomorrow based on the application I made
today. I want to know where we'll stand on that issue. I could
imagine a stressful situation if there is a language barrier, and
they'll probably let me go the first day. I don't think I stand a
chance, even if I do have 12 years experience, I'm toast if I can't
communicate with them. Realistically, if the hard labor jobs are all
swamped by illegal aliens and I don't speak spanish, I probably should
avoid the construction industry all together. Would others agree that
this is the best move in the interim?
So, I'm thinking, what should be my final options, if I can't find
anything on my job search in the near future? I'm running out of
money quick..after next week, it's all gone. Some more
background...at the moment, I can make it buy if I can at least make
enough money for food, a couple of other necessities, and some gas
money. I don't have to worry about rent or utilities for a
while...let's put it this way, I'm "paid" up on these fronts for some
time.
What should I do to make it by? Any suggestions? If none of these
jobs come through, should I put in an ad in the paper SEEKING work, any
kind of work, and provide my phone # ? BTW, what about that stuff
I've read so much spam on...about working at home and making money? I
would love to just do something where I could work by myself. Does
that stuff really work? I really don't need a whole lot of money to
make it.. Also, not to be sound silly as I may actually face this
after next week, but just in case if it does come down to this, if I'm
holding up a sign begging for money at the local street corner, what
would be my best pitch?
thank you,
Ty Steel
