i like the hospital when i really need to be there. when i can't
hang on anymore, there's someone else to help watch me, so i
don't have to be so self-vigilant all the time. when i'm better,
i can't wait to get the hell out.

yep. when i'm there, i rarely leave the 15 minute check room.
i'm always on close observation. they keep pushing me to want
to take more prn seroquel so i'll stop being such a danger to
myself. only, if i wasn't a danger to myself, i wouldn't have
to be there...

Geez. They usually put me on visual surveilence 24/7. In jail, I refused
to sign a no-suicide contract, so I had forced into an empty cell to sit
completely nude and be checked on every 15 minutes.

yeah, i go in and out of the surveillance rooms. last time, they
had me on a mattress in the hallway right outside the nurses'
station.

I kicked a whole in the wall once and they strapped me to the concrete
floor in the "time-out room". I spent three days there. The drugs they
forced into me felt really nice and serene.

the only time i was in restraints was when i was in a seclusion
room and kept bouncing my head off the floor. they probably
drugged me up, too. that was before all the ect, about 7 years
ago, so i don't remember too well.

Nope. Just a camera and a drain in the floor.

The only thing I go to the hospital (3 blocks away) for is to use the
ATM, and I like to keep it that way, because it is free of charge ! :-)

In the mid-eighties, before insurance cutbacks limited length of stays
and many units in the Chicago area closed, there was one I liked in
particular. After having nowhere to escape but my head while growing
up, then a marriage based mostly on paying the rent, I found solace in
the manufactured family atmosphere of an "open" psych unit. Living
with other people for two weeks at a time _and getting along_ was an
experience I'd never known. I learned a great deal, but yes, I used
it as a damned resort.
In 1990, my doctor got smart and left me to rot on a locked unit for
three weeks. Unitmates were not as much fun, most were delusional.
It broke the addiction. Admissions since have been for valid reasons.
Excepting my third (and last) suicide attempt in 1995, none have been
longer than a week. Not being correctly Dx'd until 2001 had some
effect as well. As of today, I have not been inpatient for seventeen
months. Last time was for a med adjustment, three days. That's pretty
good for a train wreck like me.
yours truly, living proof that one can be an inpatient over forty
times before getting appropriate treatment

The hell it is!
Every time I've been in the hospital was because I as real sick and
needed to be on IV antibiotics or prednisone. It was not fun, and I
was happy as all get out to leave.
