It was especially depressing when I used to work that late at a job
where I didn't have a window. I would leave the building and be
confronted by the dark.

I watched a special on a scientific research station at the south pole.
They said during the months of constant darkness, the depression rate among
the researchers reaches 100%. They became a community of depressed people,
all looking out for each other. No one is ever left alone for long.

I was in the same situation. Our office only had one wall with small

was small windowless offices. Florescent lighting was all we ever saw.
I would arrive at work at 7 am in the pitch black and leave at 5 in the

I had one office I could work in during the summer. It had a big window
behind where I sat, was a nice big desk. It was next to the executive
assistant for the company's engineering department though, so it was a
noisy high traffic area. I also had the super tip top department's
plotter behind me and it was always busy cranking out technical
drawings. It was kind of annoying having somebody going in behind you
every so often. Fortunately it had a bin to catch things or the
automatic cutter would have been really annoying to have things drop at
my feet.
I would usually head to the server room instead. It had air conditioning
(really heavy duty), so it was nice to hang out there during the summer
months. I was also the only one in that building that had a key to the
room, so I could grab an afternoon nap when I felt like it, well unless
somebody in my department drove all the way down to our side of the
base. (I recall that happening once or twice a year)

Sounds nice. I used to have the biggest office and window in the place in
our old building, but that change completely when we moved in to a new
building. I lost the big office and a huge full wall window. It was about
then my depression was exploding in severity and the stress of the move and
losing my spacious office and window was almost too much to bear. God I was
angry. Life has been an uphill climb ever since.

Yep, that does sound annoying, both the noise of the plotter and the traffic
to get the output.

That's a nice benifit. When I did get home for lunch, I would often lie
down on the couch, set and put a kitchen timer on my chest, and get a nap.
The kitchen timer would keep me from oversleeping.

I was about to quit my last job because of the awful cubicle world.
Combine that with cheapass furniture that made me miserable with my bad
neck and headache, just could not tolerate it. They fired my department
before I could tell my manager to stuff it.

The secretary was a beautiful red head model, she was working there

Just after I left she got steady work with an agency. I still have a

Cubicals suck big time. I've spent a lot of time in cubicals.
In my last job of 16 years, on my first day they stuck me in a small office
with 4 other programmers. We didn't even have cubical walls, just small
workstations just big enough for a monitor and keyboard. 5 people
practically climbing over each other.
Over time I graduated to better surroundings. First to an office with just
one other person, then finally to my own huge office with the full wall
window. From 5 to 2 to solo. I was happy in there for many, many years.
Until they decided to move us to a new and "better" office building just
across the parking lot. We did manage to talk them out of building a
cubical farm, and they filled the space with small offices instead. Must
have cost them a fortune to construct. The rumor was they spend about 3/4
of a million bucks to house about 15 programmers and bosses, each with a
private office. I should have immensely grateful for the private office
they gave me, but all I could think about was the window I had lost.

Some people I know at IBM are getting their offices moved, during the
..com boom there were people practically working with a PC on their lap
in the hallway. Now there's entire buildings that are practically empty.
They're consolidating everybody in and sticking 2 people in the same
office...but nobody complains because they aren't there. Something like
50% of the people telecommute. IBM doesn't have to really pay for their
office and so they're grateful and pay their cable/DSL bill.

I've been in the computer industry since 1969 or so, way before personal
computers. I never imagined what happened during the .com bust was even
possible. It used to be when the economy soured, businesses turned to
computers and automation to save money, so our industry was virtually
recession proof. I'm not sure why the .com bust was so different, but it
was devastating to my industry, my occupation specifically.
"No IT occupation has been hit as hard as computer programming since the
dot-com bust, struck by factors from offshoring to the rise of off-the-shelf
applications. U.S. programmer employment plummeted nearly a quarter from
2000 to 2003"
http://www.informationweek.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=193302725
Imagine that. Almost 1 in 4 jobs lost nationwide in just 3 years. That's
an undeniable recession that went almost totally unreported.
Even now, the decline has only leveled off. It remains to be seen what
happens next. If they keep offshoring jobs, it never will recover.
Programming as a career will become a dying art.

Something like 50% of the people telecommute. IBM doesn't have to really
pay for their office and so they're grateful and pay their cable/DSL bill.

This is my first experience with telecommuting. So far it's been ok.
