Maia and Kristina and I have sweet times and sometimes hard times.
Tonight, just before Maia fell asleep, was a sweet time.
"No school tomorrow," Maia asserted.
"No, Maia," I said, "you have school tomorrow." I was lying next to her on
her little mattress on the floor.
"Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday," she said counting
off the days.
"Friday, Saturday," I said, "very good, Maia!"
"Friday, Saturday," she said. "No school Saturday."
"But tomorrow's Friday, sweetie," I said.
"No," she said.
"Yes," I said, "but we're going to have fun tomorrow. Tomorrow's your
program. We're going to have fun."
The Christmas program is happening at her preschool tomorrow.
"We gonna have fun," she said. This thought pleased her.
She was playing with the hair that was peeking out of the top of my T-shirt.
"Maia no more hair there," she said, speaking in the pidgin she's begun to
pick up from the preschool.
"Daddy get hair," she said. "And nose, too," she said (this did not please
me), "and beard, and arms," she said feeling my arms. "Daddy lots and lots
of hair," she said, and this made us both laugh.
"School tomorrow?" she said after a while.
"School tomorrow, sweetness. But we're gonna have fun. So we have to sleep
now."
Sometime later, I woke up, and she was sprawled on the bed, her little green
blanket over her chest.
Sweetness is my favorite name for her.

:) I like your Maia stories.
I call Alexander sweetness sometimes. I used to have a huge hang-up about
"sweet" since it was something my brother used to taunt me with: "sweetie."
Funny how the baby washed all that nonsense away. Sweet is such a good
descriptor for little ones. He's six months already!

I call Wynne 'sweetie'. He hasn't objected yet. Of course, I can see
over his head, so he's still little.

He didn't even object to me pointing out that he's getting a beer belly.
He's accepted the cause (beer!), and now we need to work on reducing it.
He can be quite sensible at times.
Artois is the one I call titch. I can't call Wynne that, as his mother's
a lot smaller than he is.

What is titch?
You don't have the word over there? It means the smallest of the kind,
usually of humans, but almost definitely of animals. So Wynne would be
titch, compared to me, but he could call his mother titch.
Of course, if you had a Great Dane and a Chihuahua, and you knelt down
and said to the smaller dog 'Who's ickle titchy witchy then?', the Dane
would be quite within its rights to vomit all over you.
Do you have pictures of Artois?
Yes, but I have nowhere to put them.

Did you notice he has a moustache - a little black brush just above his
mouth, on both sides? We think it's cute. I'll try to drug him into
sitting still for long enough to take some new pickies.
