Why, of course. We have to eat them one at each clock bell stroke.

I was wondering if that particular custom had made it across the pond.
I'm glad it has :)
Funny the yankees haven't copied it, come to that.

Well, most cultural traditions of the Americans come from England, and
English feel you should copy them. (I state this as a general attitude of
English, not as a pun).

Would that be much of an outrage to the national pride to import them from
France, or Italy, or Greece?.

We already get most of our grapes from California or Africa. We can grow
excellent grapes here too; we even make reasonable wine - after all, we
can match the geology and climate of both the Champagne region and the
Rhine valley, and the "Champagne method" was invented in England; we just
had a taste for Claret and Sherry, and bitter Ales, but that is changing.

(Or Spain... the grapes grown at Alicante (in the mediterranean coast) are the best in the world for eating :)
I think it's more of a tradition thing. They have theirs, and we ours.
Anyway, you shouldn't be surprised that other fellow euros don't know much about us. Very few people in the EU knows /anything/ about Spain, quite simply because they never get to see the /real/ Spain (none of the many 'Spains', I mean). The traditional touristic areas, besides being more like theme parks, are often in the southermost coasts of Andalusia, in what were pretty isolated and underdeveloped areas that have grown to become horrible concrete monsters.
I think many people think that the interior is a desert or something, or that Spain is a dry, flat place. Actually we're the second hilliest country in Europe (second only to Switzerland) and the wettest/rainiest (yes!!! more so than Britain! if you don't believe me you can confirm that at a good atlas; I know it's hard to believe, but it's true). It's simply that the areas were most tourists go are quite dry, sometimes desert-like.
So all that about 'the rain in Spain...' is yet another myth.

It's a spanish thing. One at each stroke of the tower clock at The Sun's
Gate (a square) in Madrid - unless you live in the Canary Islands (they
are in another timezone over there), they eat them at the stroke of a
local clock.
Many people in Madrid have them *at* Sun's Gate square, so it gets
really *ultra* crowded.
The rest of us see the whole thing on telly (while trying not to choke
with the damn grapes).
Yes, emergency hospitals are in red alert that night - they have saved
many a life (some people try to swallow the grapes without munching them
first).

I dunno how's the grape crop this year, but I haven't been able to buy
seedless grapes since a lot of time ago. I'll get my groceries today; I hope
they have them this time because otherwise it is real difficult to eat them
on New Years eve in a hurry.
