This post got buries in an anvient thread in my OE. Here it goes again,
should the same happen to you.
Can you connect a drive to one of the IDE channels as slave all by itself?
That is, no master, only the slave. The drive in my case is a DVD burner.

It was answered, but yes, it works, but why would you want to do it? If
you ever put another drive on that channel, it will have to be master.
(And on the end of the cable?)

Yes and no. Some devices will tolerate it, but the motherboard won't
stand for it; sometimes it's the other way around...
If you have the master position open then why would you connect the
hardware in this manner?
Especially something like a DVD burner which is going to need a
substantial and steady feed of data or you will be in the coaster
business. (your slave hookup also may appear to work, but just kick out
mad amounts of IDE timeouts.)
