"Thanks for your service to the universe" |
I notice that a lot of the time people will say something like
"thanks for your service to your country". That's arguably ok,but what
I'd like to see a lot more is: "Thanks for serving Planet Earth",or to
be more inclusive, "Thanks for serving the universe"... I think it
would be nice if we heard those expressions more... "God bless the
universe","God bless all planets and galaxies everywhere"...thiings
like that seem much more inclusive to me then blessing one paticular
place... I am a member of the universe. And I will always be one,in
this form or in any other form. That may seem strange to some people, but
It's not something that's strange to me. I'm not ashamed of seeing it
this way...

"The Universe" is just as much an abstraction as anything else, as
countries or marriages or rock bands or political parties, and all it
seems to be for you is a proxy for the United States, something to claim
alternative citizenship in while you stamp your feet and deny that the
country you live in exists because it happens to be under Republican
leadership at present.
Cyberdroog asked what you've done for The Universe lately and you
answered that you were nice to people, or something like that, so why
don't you just stick to what you insist are the only real things --
people -- and stop babbling about "The Universe" just as a way of being
anti-nationalist?
Better yet, why don't you come down out of those clouds of abstraction
and thank somebody in particular -- possibly even yourself, that would
be cool -- for something thankable they did recently, for some
particular other person? You have repeatedly expressed the view that you
spend too much time in abstraction, and this is a good example. So, try
getting concrete. Thank somebody for something they did for somebody
else, and leave the fucking "Universe" out of it for a change.

And thank YOU for this response. Mine was unduly crabby, sorry about
that. I appreciate that you focused on the well-intentioned part. And
I'm glad you have these things to be thankful for.

Honestly,Mark...I appreciate your posts... I really do.no need to
apologize... the only posts that really upset me are the "you're an
*****,*****,idiot etc...I hope you die and go to hell" type of
posts...those have really hurt my feelings a lot...but honest,frank
discussion,feedback,criticism..that's what ASD is about, and I hope that

impossible to stay annoyed at you for long! It's positively annoying

I have something to thank you for. A while back I killfiled you because
you'd been going out of your way to target wombn for ridicule over and over
again, and it had gotten painful for me to read you. I was afraid you'd
never stop, but you did stop. I haven't seen your direct posts, but I've
seen people quote your posts and there hasn't been anything mean and
spiteful in them since you stopped doing that. I appreciate that a lot. It
hasn't been painful to read your quoted stuff, it's been nice.
Thank you for living up to the best part of your nature. Thank you for
choosing kindness. Thanks for making alvin a name that makes me smile
again! That killfile made me sad; thanks for making it obsolete.

yep,I always think it's a nice thing when people can
reconcile...sadly it doesn't always happen,it's not always possible,but
when it does,it's nice...One thing that really upsets me for example,is
my dad and my uncle, his brother...they are no longer on speaking
terms...they were never close, but now my dad is so angry and hurt by
his brother,he never wants to see him again...I can certainly
understand why my dad is so angry and hurt. but still,it makes me sad
and it upsets me...the idea of brothers and sisters not talking to each
other just really upsets me... I feel strongly that brothers and
sisters should try really hard to make up with each other,to
forgive...If there was something I could do to change the situation
between my dad and my uncle I would, but there's nothing I can do since
I never see my uncle either...It's just a really sad thing...

And thank you too...What you wrote at the time to me did hurt...but
you had every right to feel that way,of course...and you are right. It's
very easy to rationalize, but at this point,it really serves no useful
purpose to take out my anger in that way...I was hoping we'd be able to
talk again because before that point you had been really supportive to
me,and I had really appreciated it...

in all shapes,sizes and colors...There are hateful,prejudiced
people, terrorists, murderers etc...in every area of the world...We have
to find some way to get along with people...how,I don't know. But the
"us against them" way of looking at things just makes more people
alienated and angry...
Well, yeah, people like that come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. So
again, how do you treat people like them, whatever their shape, size, or
color may be? How do you say "hi" to someone who wants to cut your head
off or molest your child? Do you propose getting rid of the "us vs.
them" approach when it comes to say, NAMBLA or the Nazi Party? Should
we avoid coming down hard on NAMBLA because we don't want to make them
even angrier and more defiant?

Maybe one thing to do is try very hard to seperate the person from
their thoughts,views,actions...and to try to have sympathy and
compassion for them...and if you can't do that,at least try to have
understanding...I was reading for example about the prison system in
Denmark...about how they treat prisoners there with respect, about how
nice and comfortable the prisons are compared to in the U.S...It said
that they were generally treated very well in these prisons. and it
said in the article that much of the time the prisoners were
reformed...Maybe if other areas of the world had a similiar way of
treating people, people would change in a similiar way...

Dostoyevsky said something to the effect that "The degree of civilization in
a society can be judged by entering its prisons". i can't find an exact
quote, as it was probably originally in Russian.
anyway, the United States is failing miserably by that test.

that's because they don't learn about history, and think everything is
new and not done before... and everyone's got a way to interpret
history and it all gets confusing... can't find a real truth anywhere
nowadays... it's almost like you've got to be there to know something...

yes,I always say that variety is the spice of life...I think it's
important to have all types of people...I often wish that everyone had
far left wing views like I do...I've realized that I'm not always as
open to right wing views as I should be.Maybe more importat though then
being open to right wing, conservative views is being open to PEOPLE who
happen to call themselves "right wing" or "conservative"...that's
partly why I object to labeling of all kinds, because I sense that
people are so much more then the labels they attach to
themselves.people are not "republicans" or "conservatives"-they are
PEOPLE who call themselves "republicans" and "conservatives" among
other labels...as of course do people who call themselves "liberals"
and "democrats"...and the millions of other labels that we attch to
ourselevs...What I try very hard to do is seperate the person from
thier views.sometimes I'm sucessful,sometimes I'm not.But I think it's
important to try.but maybe the trick is to try and focus on what people
have in common...things have gotten so polarized that it's not alway
easy,but I think it's a good idea to try...
