The bird decision |
Looking at this issue rationally, I think I will not get a bird or other pet
animal. Although
+ it would be a nice friend and make me feel less lonely,
- it would require lots of time, energy, and money to keep, and
- it would not increase my exposure to human potential friends, so
- it might even increase my isolation.

Rational decisions are only as good as the assumptions you make.
Depression is full of mind tricks. You have to try to judge what is the
depression talking ('don't do this, you might enjoy it'), what could be
rationalisations of that ('it would not increase my exposure to human
friends' - it wouldn't reduce them, either) and what may be real ('it
would be a friend and make me less lonely').
Depression whispers just below our hearing, and changes the values we
give to our thoughts. ('What makes you think you deserve to feel
better?')

True. Also, any pet gives you something to talk about, and people do like
to talk about their pets (ASD is not unique in that respect). There are
often clubs or societies for owners of your chosen species, and things can
get very 'social' with those.

What about starting out by volunteering at the SPCA or some bird rescue
organization or something like that?

really wish i had time to volunteer there on a regular basis.
unfortunately, the times they need volunteers are the times i need to
be sleeping :-/

For me, the problem is allergies. I cannot work in a place full of dogs,
cats, and other animals that I'm allergic to.

Maybe there's an organization out there that works specifically with
just birds and/or reptiles? Maybe even at a university or something?
Don't know, just tossing out ideas.

There are numerous bird rescue groups throughout the US (and
Canada). There are probably reptile rescue groups too.
Google is our friend. Or Yahoo. I'm not going to do the research

Seriously, I've got to clean up my problems here first. My problems
will follow me. I've got to clean my own house, then I think about
finding the "ideal" place to live, if such a thing exists.

Canada has universal access to medical care. That might not be
"ideal", but it sure goes a long way in that direction, if you
ask me.
You ever decide to immigrate, I promise to sponsor you & wombn.

I consider that to be one of the key indicators of a 'developed' country.
