the "blue screen of death"... |
i keep getting that on my computer lately...miliseconds before the whole
thing shuts itself down and restarts. i hate it cuz it keeps randomly
happening when i'm in the middle of something (like paying a bill
online!!!). any clues as to what might cause this, anyone?
i am afraid that there are about to be major computer issues in the u2b
household.

tends to be hardware fault (eg. physical memory) or a corrupted device
driver. i connect this with the sims 2 crash problem you mentioned earlier.

Have you installed anything recently that could be tied in with your
problem.... new games...applications....drivers of any sort? What version
of Windows are you using? If XP... it rarely throws up the blue screen of
death..... well....in comparison to other versions.

it's XP, and we've had it 4 or 5 years now. this blue screen of death has
only been happening a week or so. my daughter got an mp3 player for Xmas
and it uses the computer to charge. she had to install something off a
disk. do you think that's the problem?

Possibly, there could be a driver conflict going on somewhere... can you
uninstall the mp3 player and it's associated program's and drivers? and
then see what happens... if that solves your problem the vendor for the mp3
player may have updated drivers available to download.
One other thing you could try is.....
Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. On the Advanced tab,
click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
Click to clear the Automatically restart check box under System failure, and
then click OK.
The error message on the blue screen should remain on the screen so you can
record the error information.

If all that is happening is a random shutdown and restart, it may be a power
dip. Check with other users in your locality. An UPS should fix it.
Where I am, it happens most often after midnight.
If you are getting the BSD, it would have to be a software problem.

i followed justin's advice and when i came up to the computer just now,
there sat the BSOD right there in front of me. it says something like this:
problem caused by file: mssync20.sys and then it tells me to disable or
remove any new hard or software.
if i remove the software from my daughter's new mp3 player and it fixes the
problem, what do i do about my daughter's new mp3 player?

i would try uninstalling and reinstalling it, on the off chance it got
corrupted somehow. if it still doesn't work, check the manufacturer's web
site. there might be an updated driver you can download. or if they have a
tech support number or site, you could go there and report the issue.

Certainly looks like you have yourself a RootKit/Trojan problem.... Franz
has hit the nail on the head with his research.....see his reply below/above
in here... what anti virus program are you running? and is it up to
date?...... this has been around for a while and is becoming quite a
problem for many users.
It appears that the files listed below are the cause of your problem........
you could try and reboot into safe mode and either delete or rename
them..... but it may also be deep seated in the registry.... and most
likely need a program to clean it up properly.
mssync20.exe, mssync20.sys

| Certainly looks like you have yourself a RootKit/Trojan problem.... Franz
| has hit the nail on the head with his research.....see his reply
below/above
| in here... what anti virus program are you running? and is it up to

|
|
| It appears that the files listed below are the cause of your
problem........
| you could try and reboot into safe mode and either delete or rename
| them..... but it may also be deep seated in the registry.... and most
| likely need a program to clean it up properly.
|
|
|
| mssync20.exe, mssync20.sys

Microsoft.... it's also a resource hog and overrated...... was good years
back... and yeah, partly what Franz said.

Most likely place you're paying the bill to connects to a secure server
(you'll know if the address starts with https:// If they don't have one,
beg them to do it or you won't pay onlime) which will protect you from
man in the middle snooping and such. If you're worried about a key
logger, pull up the on screen keyboard and use your mouse to punch in
any information or bank account or creditcard info. When you finish
paying the bill, close out your browser and chear all cookies and
temporary internet files and cache.
