The burden of being a minority |
I was watching the finale of Survivor: Pearl Islands last night.
Sandra, who was inescapably Puerto Rican, won the million dollar
prize. No, strike that, SHE did not win the prize. She won it, but in
a way all Puerto Ricans won it, because she was of course
"representing Puerto Rico."
Which is how it alays is with we ethnic types, is it not?
Halle Barry did not win an Oscar for her soft-core porn performance.
No, she said she won it for all the Black actresses.
So did Bush win the Presidency for all the white Texans out there?
Did Gil de Ferran win the Indy 500 to represent white trash?
For that matter, why do only the "good" (I personally would not
consider winning a silly gameshow much of an accomplishment) things
count as "representations?"
What about that Puerto Rican Day parade a few years back where women
were being forcibly stripped of their clothes by an overzealous crowd?
That was a GROUP of Puerto Ricans at an event flat out stated to
represent Puerto Ricans doing something. And yet the Puerto Rican
"community" distanced itself from those people.
It all seems rather silly to me. I have a dream that some day a person
can simply accomplish something on their own merits and not have it
attributed to everyone of their nationality and/or ethnicity (if they
are not white, of course.)

Everybody is an 'ethnic type', I suppose. Anyway that should only be of interest to anthropologists. There IS racism in Europe (much more than we like admitting), but things are different here. I haven't noticed anythink like what you're describing (so far).
BTW, what ethnicity are you (if I may ask)? You seem to consider yourself belonging to a minority.

It is mostly a media phenomenon.

I thought we had covered that before?
I am Puerto Rican.

Yep. Sounds likely.

I am Puerto Rican.
I had no idea there was a 'special' puerto rican ethnicity (I thought it was only a nationality). I suppose it's a type of 'hispanic' (that is, mixed european/indian/african) with a particular, characteristic mixture (I'm guessing, however).
It probably sounds totally obvious to you, but I live very far from there... most of that is new to me.

Lousy media always trying to drive a stake between the people of this
world!
BTW, what ethnicity are you (if I may ask)? You seem to consider yourself belonging to a minority.

You are right, "Puerto Rican" more describes a nationality (as to how
much Puerto Rico qualifies as a "nation" is another matter entirely.)
I suppose it would be better to say that I am Caribbean? But even that
fails to be an accurate description, as each island does have a fairly
distinct populace. Those of the Bahamas and Trinidad are generally
darker (and do they even speak Spanish?) than those of Puerto Rico or
Cuba.
At least I do not lump them all together as "Mexicans."
I suppose it's a type of 'hispanic' (that is, mixed
european/indian/african) with a particular, characteristic mixture
(I'm guessing, however).
True. People of the Caribbean islands are generally a mixture of the
Spanish settlers, their black slaves, and their native slaves. Unlike
the whites who kept slaves on the mainland, Spanish slaveowners were
much more willing and open to mixing with their property. The cultures
of that area are, not suprisingly, a mish-mash of the contributing
cultures.
It probably sounds totally obvious to you, but I live very far from there... most of that is new to me.
Have we reversed roles? I could have sworn that, previously, it was
you who was telling me about the differences of cultures.

I know next to nothing about Puerto Rico, really (other than it's under the dominion of the USA and that they have their own dialect(s) of spanish somewhat different to those spoken in Cuba or Mexico).
One of the things I didn't know about Puerto Rico is what people there look like (while I've seen plenty of mexicans and cubans, for example, and know they come in a variety of 'flavours'), so even if I knew well the culture I still wouldn't know what ethnicities people over there are (that's why I asked).
Of course there are quite some enciclopaedias on-line to fill the gaps.

Only for the white Texan Republicans. The rest he'd just as soon have
frog-marched to Gitmo.

When you write stuff like this, people are not going to take you
seriously. I have to tell you this is of course complete nonsense,
because I fear you actually believe it. You need to expand your
horizons beyond Bush-hating far left web sites. You know, think outside
the box.
Or, are suggesting that "real" black people can't decide for themselves
to vote for Bush or the Republicans? They're only real blacks if they
vote straight Democrat, right? They're Uncle Toms if they vote for the
GOP. Because you know better, right? They don't need to worry about
these complex issues, they just need to know that the Dems are looking
out for them. That's racist *****. It's so incredibly arrogant and
conceited and racist, I can't believe I'm seeing it from someone who
proclaims to be a progressive and to care about minorities.

We will have a color blind society when people stop obsessing about
color. The most racist people IMO are the people who scream the most
about racism. I heard Al Sharpton was pissed that Gore didn't "clear it
with him FIRST" before making his announcement in Harlem that he was
supporting Dean. As if Sharpton is some Taliban thug controlling
African-American occupied NYC! Them colored folk in Harlem will do what
the good Rev. Sharpton tells them to do, you don't worry about that.
And I'm supposed to hear about what a racist *I* am because I voted for
Bush? Puhleeze!
Say it all together now: "white skin bad..."
;-)

Well, at least you get some idea of how I probably get in trouble with my
son. I say something I think is amusing and next thing you know I'm dealing
with a serious response. Guess I should use those danged emoticons more --
now how do I use those things in real life? Ack!
