Check up on Ms. Whittington (from sixth grade). If she's not doing time,
I'll be much surprised.

the canadian teacher federation has no such program to look up anyone's
work records, he's full of *****. no one can look up employee information, it
is protected by US law. it's confidentiality, the employer needs permission
from the employee to give out any information to anyone.

Some information, such as places of employment or education, is public
anyway. But it isn't about /what/, it's about /where/. US law doesn't
apply outside US borders. Apparently US law doesn't even apply in US bases
in other countries.
(I'm waiting for the first "Guantanamo" defence for a US citizen charged
with a crime against US law and scheduled for trial in a US overseas base.
Especially if it's in Afghanistan ... It will also be interesting to see
what happens when another country uses the 'illegal non-combatant' nonsense
to detain a US citizen incummunicado for an indefinite period.)

I realise that, but still, you need permission from the employee to give out
any information about them. For my present boss to get my last employment
information I needed to call the place, ask for a permission form to be
faxed to me, siign the form and send it back. and they were taking forever
to send me the permission form and i couldnt be hired at my new job until
they got the permission to get my information. there's no way someone
anywhere would get info about me from that company wthout my permission
because they would not allow it. They can be sued and they know it, so
that's the way it is.

There's a surprising amount of personal information 'in the public domain';
even if some of it shouldn't be. Finding out where someone worked and when
they joined and left, seems to pretty straight-forward. I don't know
precisely what details are available to whoever it is % has found, there
may be no breach of any law involved - and what's illegal in one country
may not be illegal in another (it might even be compulsory).
If a company in the USA out-sources some of its wage-roll work, say, to
India, then whose law applies to the data? There are lots of new questions
that the internet raises, for which there are no effective answers.

Even before the internet was thought of, it didn't take more than a few days
for a competent private detective to come up with bank statements, marital
history, employment record, criminal record, driving offences, court
judgements, adresses for the last 10 years, and sometimes a few indicators
of health problems. Even your own bank-manager could 'tip you the wink'
about a potential customer's financial status, quite often. I'm not
condoning it, just saying that it happens.
