Object: The First of the Last Updates on My Mother
Dad spoke with the dr. this morning. Mom is too weak to breath well on
her own. She's on a ventilator. If by the weekend she's still not strong
enough, they'll perform a tracheatomy so she can breathe and eat; then
she'll be transferred to a nearby hospital with a special pulmonary unit
which deal with this sort of situation. He told Dad that it would be
probably two weeks before Mom is doing well enough to be transferred
from unit care to a regular hospital bed.
The surgeons assess they removed 95% of the cancer. The rest remains in
her lungs and uterus. They believe Mom would never survive another
invasive procedure. The malignancy, according to them, is of an
untreatable sort.
The doctor's prognosis is dismal. He said there's naught else to do but
"keep the patient comfortable for the short time she has left." And it
won't be years. Or probably even months.
Every night I watch my father cry. Every day he's at the hospital with
Mom, so he never sees me cry.

When my dad was dying watching my mom suffer was more difficult than letting
dad go. He wanted to go. He was ready. The people they leave behind never
are. Nothing I can say in the face of such pain is much comfort. All of it
sounds so trite. Just know I have walked that path and my heart is breaking
for you. You and yours are in my thoughts and prayers.

Given the doctor's prognosis, Nick, what
about hospice care? It's a lot lower key
than a regular hospital. imo. And,
please, don't let this be the last
update. Many here have experienced this
sort of painful and sad event. It helps
my own healing to hold your family in my
thoughts and prayers.
