In the years after Vietnam, there were a number of movies that seemed as
though they were reactions to that war--I don't mean the obvious, war story
films, but ones that seemed metaphors for the war and the American
experience in it.
I'm beginning to think that we are starting to see 9-11 films in that sense,
too.
I think "The Missing" is such a film. Interesting that it was called, "The
Missing." It's about kidnapped girls.
Anyhow.
Good film.

CBS has a series called Without a Trace. Anthony LaPaglia and Poppy
Montgomery. Had an amazing two parter about the twin towers. the new
twilight zone had an episode about homeland security. my job is totally
overshadowed by the Patriot Act. and i know what ya mean about the Viet-Nam
experience. it's weird being born because of a war. especially that one.

Dad had his first wife's kids in Tokyo while he worked in Viet-Nam. Met mum
in tokyo. they should never have gotten married. U.S. involvment in
Viet-Nam should never have happened. i recently saw PBS American Experience
"Daughter of DaNang." really sad. it's weird knowing one exists because of
a war. one that should never have happened.

My father was from New York City, my mom, from West Virginia. They met when
he was working as a school teacher in West Virginia at the end of WWII. He
was doing that because he had polio as a child which had crippled his left
foot and left him unable to serve in the military.
I think there is no union between two people that ever "should" have
happened. All of these relationships are wildly improbable. And the ones
that do happen to fit the stereotypes of our expectations about who should
marry whom are no better or worse than any of the others.
My Dad, by the way, also worked as a civilian in Viet Nam. I wonder if your
Dad and my Dad ever met. Wouldn't surprise me.
Hey! We're practically related!

Dunno. But my dad looked like Hal Linden, too!

Looked interesting from the adverts. Ron Howard is one hell of a director,
and I'd reckon from the cast that it's well-acted. I'm sure that there are
quite a few films that capture the zeitgeist of our particular time, much as
alien invasion movies captured the zeitgeist of the 1950s-era cold war.

I think Key Largo was one of the first of those.
Kate Blanchett and Tommy Lee Jones were both excellent, but all the players
were--especially Kate's two girls and the Brujo.
