Object: The Quality of Help Nowdays
My mom, who is older than even me, has someone who comes in once a
week to help with cleaning or whatever.
the helper told her that she was going to need a new roof on the
house. My mom thought about that, and the newt time the helper came
she asked the helper why she always gave bad news, that the helper was
supposed to make her feel better. The helper said that the roof would
probably last three or four years, then it wouldn't matter. Nice,
huh?
I told Mom that maybe an airplane would fall on the house and squish
everything, then we wouldn't have to worry about the roof. We both got
a giggle out of that.

This is one she likes. Mom saw the humor in the situation. there is
a lot of turnover in that work, I can't remember how many helpers Mom
has had. It is something I set up and insisted on, I am the call point
if something goes bad. I get a check at least once a week that mom is
doing okay. She has had helpers that she really liked, some that she
didn't like. she makes them do what she wants them to do, so it's
okay for now.

My dad needs one of those things and refuses to get one. He's been in
situations where he's fallen down and literally can't get up (he has
Parkinson's). But he's an adult and can (still) make those choices for
himself. Since he won't get one for his own sake, we've tried going
the route of telling him it would take a huge amount of stress off of
us if he'd wear one. Which is totally true. Even that didn't work.
As with many things I have no control over, I try not to think about
it too hard. It makes me sick to my stomach, if I do.
