Right. And I only responded with the US - Canada stats because
that
was
what Alan specifically asked for, however, regardless of what the
numbers
are in any other country, a murder rate of 489 people over the
course
of a
year in a country with 32,422,919 people, is pretty freaking
spectacular.

responded to a couple of cell phone text messages and found an $8

i don't think i'd like that
I wasn't too fond of it either.

I have free phone sex calls with my cell plan, so that's OK.

No, but if you move to Golden you can live on the mountain that has all

You're not allowed to discharge a firearm within reception of an
over-the-air HDTV signal.
That's why everybody does their shooting at least 2 mile radius outside
of town.
So if you want to be strapped you'll have to have a lot of co-ax. You
can't win.

Right. And I only responded with the US - Canada stats because
that
was
what Alan specifically asked for, however, regardless of
what the
numbers
are in any other country, a murder rate of 489 people over the

Dunno, but I'd imagine that in the U.S. the rate / ratio is FAR, FAR
higher.

well, there you go. I'll bet that just one of the major SUBURBS of Chicago

has more muders in a year than ALL of Canada in 1 or more years.

Allowing for a population of 300m in the USA, and 30 million in Canada
(it makes the calculations easy), the rape rate in Canada is higher, and
the assault rates a tad higher too, but the rest is way lower.
The rape rate is so much higher in Canada, I suspect it's calculated a
different way from the US figure.
We publish at least three rape rates here - convictions, reported, and
estimated; the conviction rate is very low here, the reported rate is
obviously below the actual incidence rate, so the estimate is probably
the closest to the real figure.

Those are interesting numbers but you need to set them in proportion to
the population. You could dig up population data at the CIA world
factbook and do the math from there.
Otherwise it's 489 murders in Canada which I believe to have a
population of ~600 people...

Not quite. Population of Canada 32,422,919. All stats cover 2005-2006.
Besides, Alan asked for the 'crime against the person' rates in the two
countries and I gave him just the facts ma'm(n). I'm confident that he is
smart enough to work the difference in population into the equation. :)

OMG! Rhi, don't let that happen. if cops can't help. call another set
of
cops
or, have some GOOD neighbors over to your place, or maybe get a guard
dog.
that would scare the living ***** out of me, if anyone tried to do that.
thats beyond
just creepy, its very threatening and yeah, illegal
if he comes back you could:
yell "honey, get the shotgun from the shelf and load it NOW, that
creepy
intruder is back!"
that might only work once.
ASD, brainstorm some defence techniques for Rhi.
Rhi, stay safe from creepy scary bastards!
Thanks aaron. Obtaining a gun in Canada would mean buying it illegally.
I
could legally own a handgun for use at a firing range or a rifle for use
during hunting season, however if said weapon is then used on a person, I
could end up in trouble. Though the laws seem to be relaxing somewhat.
Recently, a 15 year old boy shot and killed an intruder with a hunting
rifle
when he caught the man trying to strangle his father to death in their
home
and no charges were laid. I don't really want to shoot anyone. I just
want
this guy to go away and leave me alone. I do have a very large and very
sharp knife which I am prepared to take my chances with if forced to. I
have a dog. A fearless little Jack Russell with a *very* nasty bite. She
could do quite a bit of damage in the right set of circumstances. I have
seen people who lost entire fingers and toes to a Jack. If luck were on
her
side and she gained the advantage by getting at the face, the intruder
would
need an ambulance, but she is only 25lbs, so a grown man "standing", with
a
hard, well placed kick, could probably put her down. Mind you, she has me
to tag team with, and at this point I am way more angry than I am scared.
you can't shoot people willy nilly in Canada? i love America.

I'm putting off packing for inpatient tomorrow. I don't want to go,
but I can barely care for myself.
Awww Chim, I'm so sorry to hear this. I understand why you don't want to
go, but clearly you know you need to go. I hope you won't be gone too long
and I'll miss you while you are, but whatever it takes to take care of you,
right?. I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. You'll probably hate
this, but what the hell...((((((Chim))))))..."the really big - don't want to
let you go - squishy" kind of hugs that you can still feel a while later and
you take with you even after the hugger is gone.
