coast of southern New England. Ice
pellets in the forecast. I tried to
explain the difference between ice
pellets, sleet, hail and frozen rain to
a friend. But I couldn't.

real nice smooth burning hard wood

only thing with cedar is the sparks ,

Technically, no. Deciduous trees are hardwood; evergreens, like cedars,
are softwood. It has nothing to do with the hardness of the wood - balsa
is a hardwood, and you can carve it with your fingernails.

i'm burning some of my best vintage stuff ,
real nice smooth burning hard wood
oh i miss a fireplace so!!! we had one in our home in memphis that took up
one entire end of our den. it was so big, our entire family of 4 could
practically stand inside of it. we burned many a glorious fire in that
sucker. *sigh* i remember when we had a huge ice storm one year and the
power was out for days, we spent the whole time in our den by the fire
cooking and playing games. my oldest girls were just little munchkins then
and it was a real treat to them. :)
the fireplace we have now is a joke. so much so that i have never once even
burned a fire in it. in fact, i have a big green plant in it instead. it's
a pretty fireplace...surrounded in limestone...but it's puny. after that
huge sucker we had in memphis, there's just no comparison. and it's not
like we have alot of weather in austin that requires use of one! although
this weekend it sure would have been nice. it does have a gas starter built
into it, and i AM considering at least getting some gas logs for it. that'd
be something, i guess.

yeah, see...that's what i'm thinking. that even just a lil ole gas log fire
