Object: The UK now has two Prime Ministers
at least until the 27th of June, the present one, Tony Blair, and his
successor confirmed today, Gordon Brown.
Gordon Brown was born in my city and is MP for Kirkcaldy (pronounced
"kir-caw-day") and Cowdenbeath. That constituency is in the Kingdom of
Fife which just happens to be in Scotland. And you know what all that
means?! The English are being ruled by a Scot! A Jock! A sweaty sock!
They have to do what he tells them! Get it right up ye!
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I don't know if the north Americans or Aussies or even you know how
offensive the word "jock" is to a Scot. Yes, many of the Scot's
soldiers in the British army use it to describe themselves but that's
a deliberate reaction to it being used as a term of abuse against
them. To put it in context, replace the word "Scottish" with the word
"Jewish" and the word "jock" with the word "kike". That's how
offensive it is and if someone were to call me that to my face I
reckon there would be bloodshed.
On reflection, I should have posted the OP in a different way, or
perhaps not at all.

I'm no Labour supporter but I'm sure I'll be accused of bias for this
anyway:
Gordon Brown may not be the most photogenic of politicians, his smile
may look strained and unnatural at times and he does have that weird
"mouth thing" he does but the man is highly intelligent (he was
accepted at Edinburgh University at the age of 16 and was subsequently
elected Rector and Chairman of the University Court while still a
student. He graduated with a first class honours MA and worked as a
lecturer before becoming a journalist at Scottish Television.) and has
a depth of character Tony Blair could only imagine (He suffered a
serious injury while playing rugby at 18 and lost his left eye. He
only has partial sight in the right eye and faces the prospect of
going blind completely if the retina becomes permanently detached.
That could happen at any time. At the age of 50 his first child was
born. Unfortunately she was born prematurely and died a short time
later. His second son, who is just about a year old, has cystic
fibrosis. To cope with all that while, first, studying for his degree
while spending weeks at a time in a darkened room in hospital and
going through numerous operations to try to save his sight and then
trying to cope with personal grief in the glare of the media while
continuing to carry out his public duties I think speaks volumes for
the man.).
I don't agree with him on many things but I do admire and respect him,
not for his politics but for his character.

I can't say I'm enamoured of the bloke. I'm just hoping he turns out to
be better than Blair.

For the record, Tony Blair is a Jock too:
<http://www.number-10.gov.uk/output/Page4.asp>
The son of a barrister and lecturer, Tony Blair was born in Edinburgh,
but spent most of his childhood in Durham. At the age of 14 he returned
to Edinburgh to finish his education at Fettes College. He studied law
at Oxford, and went on to become a barrister himself.
[...]
Technically, Mister Tony is PM [1] until he hands in his resignation to the
Queen, after which the Queen has to invite someone else to take the job.
Traditionally the first person to be invited is the leader chosen for
themselves by the members of {the largest party [2] in} the House of
Commons, but neither the invitation nor its acceptance is a foregone
conclusion. Of course, if the Queen invited Tony Benn [3] or Vic Reeves
[4] she might get a rough ride from the Commons.
'Prime Minister in waiting' or 'presumptive' might be more appropriate
terms for the odd position of Mr Brown. Whatever he might say before he
gets the invitation.
[1] I'm not sure that the post of "Prime Minister" actually has any formal
standing at all; it's origin is a rather messy and dishonourable fudge
arising from exploitation of Queen Anne's ill health and George I's
malleability and poor English. "Today regarded as the first British prime
minister, Walpole would not have described himself as such. The title was
originally a term of abuse, not status, and was not officially recognised
until 1905". <http://www.number-10.gov.uk/output/Page174.asp> and
<http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/PRwalpoleR.htm>.
[2] The largest party in the House of Commons need not have any
relationship with any 'permanent' or other political parties the MPs might
be affiliated with; it's just that it's been rather a long time since MPs
have stood (or sat) as and for themselves and their constituents rather
than for their sponsors.
[3] A respected elder statesman and socialist 'Old Labour' retired MP.
[4] A comedian.
