Went to be early last night. So tired, just went to bed. 5 1/2 hours
later, and now I'm wide awake. This sucks. My body is a mystery, I
have no control over it.

I've done that before. I think I was awake for over 48 hours once.
Do you generally have a sleep problem, or is there something specific
going on right now that's causing this particular instance?

sleep problems suck. Here are some things that helped me:
1) melatonin - this is great, no side effects (not a drug). 3-6 mg sublingual
is best, You can take 3 mg in the middle of the night and it will help you to
get more sleep.
2) real slow yoga 20 minutes before bed, works great.
3) walk in the sunlight in the morning
4) breathe through the left nostril only, slowly, for 20 minutes. This is a
yogic trick that has a really calming effect.
