A couple of years ago, there was a cases where two Presa Canarios killed
a young woman in a hallway outside of her apartment. I've never seen one
of these dogs, but as a dog lover [especially large, powerful dogs] I
know that one truly has to maintain absolute control over many of them.
In nearly 100% of the cases, I blame the owner for unacceptable canine
behavior. That was probably true in this case, too.
And you are so correct about people having dangerous dogs, when they
should not have them. Many folks shouldn't have any sort of dog at all!
I'm curious: the owner of this dog died. Why are you more angry than
sad? I feel somewhat sad, but not angry, because this is what I believe
should happen to inept dog owners.

I'm angry because I believe these kinds of deaths are directly linked
to breed ban legislation. Pit Bulls are illegal in my area. As a
result, the only people who own them are law-flouting jerks, and the
only people who seel them are disreputable breeders.. It also causes
people to look to many of the huge aggressive mastiff breeds that are
much more difficult to control, which leads to excessive and
irresponsible breeding for the wrong traits, which leads to accidents
like this.

I agree with much of what has been posted in this thread about irresponsible
dog owners. That being said, I am a fan and have been an owner of several
breds that are known (at least in the media) for being dangerous or
aggressive. I have found it is not the dog that is born agressive (unless
specifically and purposfully bred from lines of known agressive parents and
then trained or treated in such a way to bring out and develop that
aggression). It is the owner who causes them to be agressive. You can
train a dog to be protective and still retain the control to handle the
animal if you just take the time to learn how and develop a rapport with
your animals.
I have had pitts, rotts, dobies, and mutts mixed with one or more of those
breeds - I have never feared any of my dogs and I have never had a dog
attack anyone who did not deserve it. One did get the man who broke into
our house one night, we thought to rob, but turned out he was actually a
suspect in several break in rapes and was being sought by police - my old
dobie got him good enough to need an ambulance and a ton of stitches, but
not die, and she held him in the corner of the room until the police arrived
and I called her off.
I had a purebred pit a long time back that was shot and killed by a police
officer. The dog, in his own fenced yard, was doing exactly what he had
been trained to do - protect my property and me. The cop decided that
rather than heed the beware of dog signs and go around my property to get to
the alley (they were looking for a suspect), he jumped my fence, rounded the
corner of the house and came face to face with my dog. The cop shot him,
even though all the dog did was growl and hold its position. I was
screaming at the cop, to stand still and I would secure the dog. But he
just shot him right in front of me. The dog was at least 20 feet from the
officer when he killed him - and the dog was staying right where he was at
my command. There was no reason to shoot him. PERIOD.
Today I have a pit/lab mix who is nearly 7 years old. She has also been
trained to protect my home and me - and she is quite agressive when
confronted by someone who she does not know. But, I am extremely cautious
with her around strangers - even using a quick release muzzle if we will be
walking in a high traffic pedestrian area. She will only growl at people
when she preceives a threat from them. When I have workmen in the house or
on the property, I put her in her kennel in the house. There are signs
posted outside at all entrances to the house and yard warning to beware of
the dog. Plus, I carry liability insurance so that should anything ever
happen, I am covered. I have had the city clerks give me attitude and *****
every time I go in to renew her license. I had several vets and groomers
refuse to see her - even though she loves going and has never growled at
them. But people hear "PITT BULL" and they lose the ability to think
rationally it seems.
As for being around children, she loves kids. My nephews, when they were
toddlers would ride on her back, would pull at her ears, and try and grab
her tail (she is not docked). The youngest even took a meat bone right out
of her mouth once. Not once did she so much as growl at them and I would
trust her alone with any of them. Hell, if I say "the boys are coming to
see you", you should see her freak out! She sits by the window and waits
for them to arrive just quivering with anticipation and wont get more than a
foot away from them the whole time they are here.
Now, if I could just get her to stay out of the garbage can or not roll in
every foul smelling thing she happens to find when she is out in the yard!

i find it incredibly frustrating more than anything. so many of these
injuries and fatalities could be prevented by simple common sense
steps.

i had some anonymous moron on livejournal climb up my ***** last night
and offer to kill my dogs for me before they rip a child's face off,
but i sure told him! i told him that i feed my pit bulls fresh baby
three meals a day, and boy oh man isn't it hard finding a steady
supply of baby!

I meant that they are irresponsible bred because the demand is so high,
so many are overly aggressive. They are also much larger dogs, and
often way too much dog for the owner.
I think some people are perfectly fine with a smaller, more
companion-style dog, but would be totally overwhelmed and inept with a
herding or working dog. The requirements for the dog are very
different.
For example, no matter how upset Gomez might get with me, he is still a
pug. He can barely eat his food with his face like that, much less bite
anyone. Also, his temperament is such that it would never occur to him,
he doesn't have any of those triggers. But a poorly bred Pres de
Canario can be a ticking bomb, especially in the wrong hands.

I love it!
Did I ever tell you about this friend of mine that had a black Pit Bull
named D-o-g? YOu could tell the dofg(in spanish) "Go kiss the baby,"
and she would find the toddler in the room and run over and lick their
face. My daughter was about 1 1/2, and she was so in love with that
dog. She would follow her around hugging her.
BTW, she still has her face!
