my next med. it's worth a shot. my thyroid's not low, but
sometimes thyroid works as an antidepressant. so we'll add that
to the mix. i'm glad we're doing something.

Lisa,
Becareful with Thyroid Hormone.
I had Thyroid Cancer in 2000, they removed my thyroid completely. I won't
say I am an expert, but... After having hundreds of thousands of dollars
worth of operations, hospitalizations, research, radiation, medication,
tests there is soooooo much your little thyroid controls, if your going to
introduce thyroid hormone to the cocktail mix to help your depression, see
an endocrinologist (thyroid/diabetes doctor) prior to starting those meds.
I can tell you if they use something like Synthroid (Thyroid hormone), it
has a 6 week shelf life, meaning, it'll take six weeks before you feel it
and another six week to get it out of your system. An overactive thyroid
can cause Graves Disease which is deadly if not carefully monitored. Just
becareful.

i'm planning on talking to my endocrinologist. this isn't
synthroid, it's apparently a synthetic t3, taken in the
smallest possible dose. synthroid's a thyroid precursor, and
this is a synthetic hormone. it's got a short half-life. i
have to be sure to take it at the same hour every day.
thanks jane.

my thyroid's ok, too. it sometimes goes a little high when my
depression's at its worst, but the endocrinologist said that's
normal for a very severe depressive crash. hopefully, adding
just a bit extra will help pull me out of this.

Did your p'doc or family doctor tell you your thyroid is "ok"? The reason I
ask, is I was told mine was ok too, even though I had a lump for four years.
I finally went to a family doctor who had just finished with his own thyroid
cancer and he said "a lump" of any kind on the thyroid is "not" ok. After
having it removed and having a biopsy on my thyroid, they told me I had been
suffering from hashimito's thyroiditus, which a hypothyroid, which slows the
body down, metabolism, etc. I suppose it could cause depression or add to
ones depression. Like I said in an earlier comment though the meds didn't
pull me out but.... I did go about 6 years without cutting and 4 years
without crashes. The only person I would trust to tell me my thyroid levels
are ok is a Endocrinologist. I know I'm being repetitive but I hate to see
you try something that may only hurt you physically, rather then help you,
psychologically.

my thyroid's fine. i had a full workup a couple of years ago
by an endocrinologist. all the right levels of everything, and
my thyroid palpated normal. i went to see him after a hospital
doctor noticed my thyroid levels swing during a psych
hospitalization. the endocrinologist explained that a severe
depressive crash will temporarily unbalance thyroid levels.
once i came out of the crash, everything was normal again.
both hashimotos and graves disease run in my family, along
with all the autimmune conditions. i've always had my thyroid
watched.
this is the smallest possible dose of synthetic t3 (25 mcg
cytomel). my mother's had thyroid problems all her life, so i
know what to watch for. i'll be ok.

thanks alan. my pdoc said that it's been shown to improve

As far as winning with Thyroid meds??? I've been on Synthroid .135 for 6
years... Ummm I'm still here. It'll be 6 weeks before you'll notice
anything depending if he's using something like Synthroid. He could just be
giving you a T3 or T4 supplement. Those have about a 8 - 10hr shelf life,
in and out of your system quick. Keep a close eye on your symptoms once you
start them. Heart rate, body temperature and how the temperature feels to
you. Watch your skin for dryness, hair for dryness or thinning. Jeez there
are so many symptoms if he's gonna make you hyperthyroid. You'll lose
weight, have more energy, your metabolism will increase. They keep me
hyperthyroid, in order to keep any thyroid microcells from growing more
cancer. Seriously hun I'm not being over sensitive to this, your thyroid is
a very important gland, without it a person will eventually go into a coma
and die, you wanna make sure he's not hurting your thyroid. Go see a endo
before you get too deep into the thyroid med hormone. I wish I had read
this earlier!!!

Grrrr I should have read this whole thread before I went crazy with worry.
Cytomel is a Thyroid hormone but short lived. They had me use this right
after radiation because its reactive the same day you take it. It was like
taking speed!!! It would last about 8 hours then CRASH!!! I only took this
until my regular thyroid hormone pills Synthroid took effect. DO NOT take
it at night, take it in the morning or mid morning, otherwise it'll keep you
up at night here is a link on it
