Tire Change on the Highway |
I got a call from one sister last night that my other sister was stuck
with a flat on the highway. I was reading a faith book at the time, so
I said 'yes, I'm on my way'. I found her(I'm not familiar with my new
area), she had 2 of the small kids with her. she came up to my truck
and said, 'I hate my life'. She was recently in a hospital for SI. I
figured out the jack, talked to the cop who pulled up, changed the
tire, got a hug from the kids and went home. In the mean time, my
mother had come to my house to watch Bob (86). So it was like a family
pull-together kind of thing, and I handled it with no drama, no
whining....and my sister was smiling when she pulled away. Since my
father died, and I'm not married, it felt like I was needed. Twas
cool. Maybe I can design a superhero costume and do this for a
living.(I know-'what does this got to do with depression?'
.....everything I am has something to do with depression.)

just because we're depressed doesn't mean we give up.....
I once drove clear up to the Canadian Border (about 475 miles round trip) in
the worst snowstorm of the year to get my sister..........
and I'd do it again in a heartbeat

I hear ya. Family. It's important in real time. When everything is
normal, and I'm not seeing them, I start thinking, "well that one did
this to me once, and that one did this, etc..." but when the call
comes, we run.

Helping those in need, especially family, is an excellent way to deal
with depression.

Yeah, the kids told mom later that I was heroic. But I take care of an
elderly guy, my friend of 30 years, and he needs me to be there at
certain times of the day for certain things...it must be like being a
parent...and although I do it, sometimes I'm moaning through it. But
yeah, if someone didn't need me, I'd be back alone like 5 years ago,
twiddling my thumbs, wondering what my place in life was.

Then in my book, that does make you a hero. Sure, you aren't putting
your life at risk, but you're doing something (sometimes when you
don't want to do it) that has a positive impact on other peoples'
lives. Got any better definition of a hero?;-)

I could have used you last week. Send me your number, I'll put it on
speed dial. (I thought people were flipping me off, turns out they were
trying to tell me my tire was low. I also found out it's not smart to
drive on a tire with very low pressure.)

This was a weird tire, Volkswagon...the studs are on the bolts, I have
one of those cross metal bolt looseners, and it wouldn't fit the nuts
either. So I used the little one provided. I had to pretend I was

Yea, VW makes life a pain in the ***** that way. When I had a Jetta I'd
just focus on lifting the tire and getting 1 stud hanging. Then either
lock the parking brake or push the brake pedal and run to the front to
rotate up the 2nd nut. Having a helper hold the brake pedal down is
nice. (NO...don't get in the car while it's on jacks!).
That may not make sense, but while you're trying to get the 2nd stud/lug
nut in you spin the brake rotors too. So a little drag helps.
I don't know how bad rear drums are, but I had 4 wheel discs. Presumably
because it was the "fancy" GLI version.
I also had one front rotor that a previous owner had busted the little
screw that keeps the rotor in place. That was fun because you got to
line up 3 things for every change.
I MUCH prefer the Volvo way where there's 5 lugs and then a little nub
to help orient things.

I don't have a license to drive a car, I lost them since I don't
drive a car for so long.
I ride a kind bicycle the one without switch a gear and pump air for a
wheels. Drop some oil when makes noice after wet by a rain.
Very simple.
My neice hates ride a bicycle make her feel like she lives in the
strange world or something.

I mean, when rained and the bicycle got wet creating a lot of squeeky
noice when ride on, then I use oil around the socket area, just a tiny
bit.
Please careful when you ride whatever you on.
I don't ride on bicycle on the Highway.

I had a VW Jetta a while ago with BBS wheels that had locking lug nuts
(1 lug on each wheel had a fucked up pattern so you had to keep this
little key to fit on the lug wrench when needed).
Got a flat, no way was that lug coming off...had to tow it to shop,
the guy had to drill that lug out of all 4 wheels. NTB (last place to
change my tires) apparently hadn't heard of a torque-wrench.
Another I've never...I've never actually changed a tire. Now I've got
run-flats so I guess I never will...

Never changed a tyre? You'll be telling me next that you've never lost a
wiper blade in a storm before. Luckily it was a hatchback so I could use
the one from the rear screen. I've always carried a spare since then.

I've only had problems with the non winter versions getting the flex
joints stuck so they're rather worthless. I just always use winter
wipers now...not much rain.
