I was always a shy guy growing up. I was the quiet kid. "Gee, why is
your friend so quiet?", or, "How come you never talk?", or many other
variations on this theme. Girls in my high school weren't all that
interested in talking about books like:

Go figure. I used to poo-poo or bemoan the concept of small talk.
Mostly cause I couldn't do it. You know, it's "shallow". (I still have
a lot of trouble with it, but I can at least get by in some situations
now.) But the fact remained, the guys who were good at small talk
seemed to be a lot more successful socially than the guys who wanted to
talk about serious stuff. Which, when you think about it, sorta makes
small talk actually kinda important.
