Yea, Isn't it like six discs? One of the reasons, of very many, I don't
use Linux. I'm happy with FreeBSD and the ports collection. I install
the base system, and compile everything myself. It can take weeks,
especially on this machine. Hell, I wanted KDM, and it took me seven
days to install kdebase and kdelibs.

i didn't know KDM was dependent upon base. i think i use KDM or XDM on most
machines.

Yea, that's KDE for you. It wishes it was Windows. If you want one piece
of software you have to install 500megs of other stuff to get it, and
they're moving more and more stuff to base and libs every release.

haha. i will try KDE on this old machine. i do love the look. never been
much into Gnome.
on really old machines i use IceWM (or Screen!).
there is a console (?) / text based window manager called TWIN. but it's
very ugly.

if someone came up with a cool version of TWIN, i'd probably use that.
sometimes i tinker with Ion3. Ion helps me focus on one task at a time
without being side-tracked.

I use XFCE4 when I want something pretty (like now), motif if I just
want to run X apps, and usually just run in console and use screen.

my main machine is normally XP. my 2nd was FBSD until recently. due to my
poor internet connect, i decided to get a multidisc (5?) set of OpenSuSE.
it came in a Linux Format magazine (good magazine btw).
to install FBSD, i downloaded a min install CD and use ICS on XP to fetch
everything via web or FTP. it worked out pretty well.
sometimes FBSD doesn't like the Intel 810e (?) video card, but linux likes
it. OpenSuSE won't give a graphical install on it either, so i used text
install.

Have you reported the problem to the errata list? It's too late to get
it fixed for the 6.1 release, but it would help. What version of FreeBSD
did you use? I run 6-Stable on anything important, and 7-Current on
several machines as a debugger and tester.
OpenSuSE won't give a graphical install on it either, so i used text
install.
I wouldn't have it any other way! Who needs to waste precious resources
making a pretty presentation you only see once? I'll stick with good ol'
sysinstall.

I just read in another group that the Intel 810 video card is now fully
supported in FBSD since the release of Xorg7.0 and Xorg6.9. However, you
would need to build from ports to get it, it hasn't been pkg'd yet.

I'm really having trouble following this thread. I'm religiously reading

FBSD, Debian, and Slackware are all similar in difficulty. i'm not a big
fan of slack unless you use swaret or the like. Debian is a pain in the
*****.
FBSD is pretty cool, but seems to support less hardware than linux.
i like ports and pkg_add -r. also like Debian's manager.

Yes, it is.

Well, it supports different hardware. Try running SuSE or Redhat on a
386SX with 16M RAM. Intel seems to favor Linux, and lends development
teams to them. I pretty much just buy quality hardware. It's always
supported no matter the OS.
i like ports and pkg_add -r.
I like having the ability to choose between the two. It's nice. I prefer
ports even though it takes a while to compile everything.

UML is ported to BSD. I don't do VPS so I don't know a lot about it.
